Now I'm mad

Postby nofinchance » 19 May 2009 18:36

Had my car at a so called 'classic Triumph' specialist for 6+ weeks now.I took it in for an MOT,to see why the oil light won't go out, change the fuel tank and a new front subframe.[xx(]
He says it will be ready Saturday but don't hold your breath cuz he told me that last week[:)].The sub frame is on, the fuel tank is on however this is a mystery as he says he did not fit a new one to save costs so fitted a used one. Also he would have to replace the tank straps with a new tank.So you don't with a used tank? I think he has just poured tank sealer into my original tank as he mentioned waiting for it to seal[}:)].Also the MOt failed for electrical faults the main one being the right headlight won't raise.I just paid a bloke to fix the lights so one of these guys is scaming me.My Triumph garage says he could not make the light work and has fitted a new one! I don't know why he did'nt just change the motor[?].And finaly after all this he says he has tested the engine and the oil pressure is fine through the rev range and he has no idea about the light[:(!].AND AND AND The bill has gone from "won't be more than £500" to £865!! I have only spoken to him by phone so will have it out saturday. All who saw my excited recomendation for this guy forget it.Oh and when I questioned his work time he told me that old cars are pigs to work on.Hello it's his trade and the numptee did not get back to the MOT centre in seven days so I got charged for two tests![:(!]

If you told him to fit a new tank and he didn't without consulting you - that sounds out of line. However, so long as the replacement tank is completely clean (and doesn't leak!!) then you should be okay.

Think you need to invest in some tools [:)]

Good luck on Saturday.

Shaun.

Yup, sounds like you have reason to be pissed. You're probably right about the tank....and the headlight motor....and surely he must have tested the oil pressure switch and associated wiring. Time to find a new "specialist".

Anecdote: An aquaintence took his Austin A40 into a "British car specialist" and $3500 and six months later ( after he saw his car parked out in the rain with window down and interior soaked in the garages parking lot) he drove it about 40 miles when the wheel fell off. Mechanic forgot to grease the wheel bearing and it seized on the axle with disasterous results.

Keep looking. If you were local we TR7 guys would be volunteering our time to make it right for you after what you've been through. Keep the faith. Hopefully there is a good mechanic somewhere in your locale.

Thanks for the support. It is not the cars fault I just seem to have a knack for finding rip off merchants [:)].When I moaned last week that my car was not ready as promised he went off on a rant about how he is doing me a favour fitting me in to his busy workshop. With friends like this who needs enemies[:0].
I will be happy when I get to drive my car more than up and down the drive like 'rain man' "Tuesdays and saturdays..... yep"[:D] Besides there are no pockets in your coffin so may as well spend on something fun.

In the 32 years with this TR7, it has been to a garage but once to set the mixtures with the fancy exhaust gas analyzer. It came out of there in worse shape than when it went in. Everything else I have down myself; engine overhaul, gearbox overhaul, innumerable fixes on most everything else including research and finally comprehending the mysteries of multiple Z-S carburetion.

Ladies and Gents, please, if you're going to own and drive one of these fine cars, PLEASE learn how to work on it yourselves. With this brave new world of the internet, we now have a near instant, almost 24 hour a day support group at this website. We have people, experienced and grizzeled veterans of the car wars scattered all over the world in various time zones. When your asleep in London, Hasbeen is having breakfast the next day Australia while I'm cooking supper in the central U.S. We are here for you and each other.

Please start buying tools and workshop manuals to research each of the problem areas of your car. And, know in your heart, the only good hands you can trust are the ones at the end of you wrists.

Used tanks arent a good idea on a TR7, if you are paying labour to fit a tank, at least with a new one it will only need to be done once.

Go through the bill carefully Steph, especially the fuel tank costs.

A brand new one is about £120 I think, a couple of years ago I bought a really good solid used tank for just £20. As Chris says, if he took the tank out then there really is no reason not to fit a new one, especially if that is what you asked for! Make sure this guy is not ripping you off on the cost of the tank.

I am curious about the MOT fail 'cos the headlight wont raise. OK if the thing is stuck down then I guess it would fail, but the test is just for the light to be on & correctly aligned - why not wind it up manually for the test, & just leave it up? Fix it later.

My sympathies, leaves a bad taste when you feel like you are being ripped off.

Thanks Tony.I am P*****d for exactley the reasons you describe.I was quite sure I told the guy to put in a new tank.He says he was trying to save me money and fitted a used one.As for the headlight thing a major row is going to kick off as he told my Dad on the phone he could not get the right one to work at all and has replaced the whole unit.WHY ??? On top of this I paid an electrical guy to do the lights and they worked perfect when i took the car in. This bloke is supposed to be a triumph specialist.More like a Con artist.Mildred is correct of course the only hands to trust are your own .I do enjoy working on my car but just don't have free time for major work.Sorry to moan on about this but it helps to know someone cares[V]

Car not ready again on saturday[:(!].he says the MOT tester was off work ill when he took the car.Handy realy as the tester is off on holiday till wednesday as well[:o)].I saw a Triumph herald there with an MOT issued on Friday from the MOT station[V].I was horrified to see that it was a station that passed a car I owned previously that had been repaired with wood and screws at another shister.I told my 'Triumph specialist' this and he went mad saying the MOT guy was personal friend etc etc.So no more work wil get done now on my car.Not a problem as I am booking a holiday to DIY the car as during this stay at the 'triumpoh specialist' it has got worse. Before relations broke down he says the work done is this.
1.New subframe and bushes
2.New steering joint couplings
3.New Fuel tank straps(old tank removed washed out and sealed/replaced[:0])
4.Luminition fitted
5.Complete brand new right headlight
Now the bad news.
He has no idea why the oil pressure light illuminates. The oil pressure is good he says.I am told that my fuel gauge no longer works also all the dash lights dance like a christmas tree and he says the fuse box is a mess off live dangling wire behind.Apart from the oil light he was supposed to mend all the other stuff worked fine before his 'expert touch'.He blames my previous electrical repairer.I think he has messed and broke it but have no proof.
I am thinking he has poured in the tank sealer with the sender in situ and gummed it up? As for the other stuff does anyone know where to start.I am getting close to giving up it's sell, scrap or cure time[B)]

I have a knack for finding crooks[:D].The garage that did a body repair with wood and screws was a general classic car specialist nr to me who I will never use again, the MOT station is behind this dodgy dealer and is a Land Rover 4 x 4 specialist. The so called 'triumph specialist' is a seperate garage who also uses the 4 x 4 MOT station. It is probably not wise to name names even though I would like to however lets just say they are all within 5 miles of each other on the A4538/A44 Towards Pershore worcestershire in the west midlands.Abandon all hope ye who enter this triangle[:p].I have just noticed that they are all specialists.Makes you think......... at what!
When I get the car back does anyone know a trustworthy electrical place to mend these dash errors? Or where do I start to DIY it.
