Decal Colors Vs. Paint/Interior

Postby V8Wedgehead » 11 May 2009 13:16

I don’t know if this has been discussed before but I would like to know mostly from the UK folks about what is the right color decal to use on a pageant blue TR8 coupe with beige interior. The car has been repainted once in the original color and now wears gold/tan decals. From what I have seen depending on the shade of the color the interior majority of the time would dictate the decal unless it was a very pale color to where a gold/tan decal was not clearly visible. Typical examples are Carmine red with beige is gold/tan or silver for 1975?, Triton green with blue or tan check is Black, etc. Is there some form of a chart from BL?

Michael,

From memory when the cars were current, I believe the exterior stickers / decals were white. (I hope that by decals you mean the cars' exterior badging) That goes for both Speke and Canley cars with their different designs. I've got nothing official to back it up but here's a link showing the same on a current car.

My own car is Jaguar Solent blue and I decided on black badging to match the bumpers and quarter lights. In some lights they almost blend into the dark blue paint.....Even with a V8 under the bonnet it's still badged as a 7 to keep it a bit of a sleeper on the road especially when parked, to minimise the wrong sort of attention.

Pageant blue cars have silver decals, my sons car has been in the family a long time and was totally original when bought. He also has a Tahiti blue car which also has silver decals. No cars(any colour) to my knowledge left the factory with white decals.Gold(or buckskin) is usually seen on red cars.

I think for the TR8 strobe decals/badging the silver might be too light and blend with the paint and same with the gold but maybe a little better?

There was a mint TR8 coupe at our car show a few yrears back that was blue (I'm not sure if it was pagent but in that range) and it had silver/white deals. Don't know the details of originality of it as I didn't talk to owner but another instance of that colour. Gold usually goes to the red/green spectrum. I'm sure some body colours had different decal colours originally as nothing seems cast in stone when it come to Triumph manufacturing floor.

My issue with the TR8 I have is the gold decals/badges are really faded and cracked. I know of only one other Pageant blue coupe in Germany with a black interior with black decals/badging. So from the data base of coupes from Paul MacDonald we know of two confirmed Pageant blue coupes. I think I might have to buy the black, gold and silver sets to see how they look. I know the Pageant blue TR7s with black or silver look good but that is the wreath and solid lettering. The strobe decal is a hit or miss deal......

I finally got the blue coupe home and got to look the car over pretty well. I found out that the front and rear badges are so faded and cracked they look like they were gold. The badges on the side "Triumph Wreath" over the "3.5 Litre" are silver. I also know this ir correct as indicated by Chris Turner because the car has all original paint less the front bottom where the spoiler mounts. I guess at one point it was replaced. The rest of the car is original pageant blue. I did find some rust in the right side inner lower rear quarter, spare tyre, front left inner fender at the clutch pedal area and some exposed seam joints. The car has the right TR8 Alloys and interior has been reworked but I have some very original brown carpet from another coupe I will install. It is missing the emissions and has some wiring issues but it is to be a nice original driver. I think the paint will stay as is less some touch up. I hope everyone agrees!
