Incredible Hulk...

You won't like me when I am angry[:(!].Hurricane steph is in town so watch out naughty garage!!!
I have had my car in a specialist Triumph garage for three weeks now although frustrating this is not the problem. The garage guy wanted to have an MOT done to see where we are before carrying out major work.I took the car to him for a fix on my oil light never going out.He has finaly got round to the MOT and of course the car failed. Now this is my problem it failed on a headlight failing to rise along with an intermitent rear light.I knew the car had electrical faults so had these attended to at a seperate electrical specialist garage who also had my car weeks and rebuilt the lights along with other stuff. The car has not been used since in fact in my ownership garages have had it longer than me so far! So my Triumph guy is doing an electrical system report for me to take to the elec garage and demand a refund.Look out for a short, blond very angry woman in the midland area tommorow[}:)]

Hiya.

You know what you should do . . . . . . . .?

Buy another one to drive whilst you get this one fixed!

Cheers,

Shaun (ducking)

I'm just glad that I don't have to deal with that MOT stuff over here. Our equivelent is called a State Inspection. Guy I take my cars to just checks the insurance info, writes it up & puts a sticker on. In all fairness, he knows I have a repair shop and believes me when I tell him the brakes ect. are good. My heart goes out to you UK people. Sounds like they put you through the wringer so to speak.

Steph, I've had a fair share of angry females in my life. Admittedly of my own doing I supose.[;)] Have to admit that I can be intimidated by a female more easily than a male. Worse yet is when you start crying [:(] Maybe try that? Naw, you don't sound the type. Best wishes and hope you can get all these different agents to correct things so you can drive.[:)]

Hi,

That sounds like bad luck with your garages and their choice of MOT station.

7's can pass the MOT without the headlight pods raising themselves. They can be disconnected and wound up manually for the test. Headlights permanently raised were a common sight on our cars back in the 80's. There's nothing trick about our rear lights either although chasing a bad connection or earth can take a while.

Ok - so I understand that the MOT is the UK equivalent to our state inspection over here on this side of the pond. But, what the hell does MOT stand for???

The only work done right is the work you do yourself. All the more reason to roll up the sleeves and learn to do it one step at a time. Other than that patience and a good mechanic is paramount.

Electrical can be tricky but take it step by step with an electrical diagram. It's simple compared to say an IBM Copier I but then so is a Boeing 747.[:o)]

Here's hopeing it all works out in the wash.

Steph, our lights work, when they do, on the use it or loose it
principal.

I rarely use one of the Triumphs at night, & whenever I wanted to,
the lights would play up. I found that they would only keep working,
if they were kept working.

That is, when I started turning the lights on, for a couple of
minutes, each time I got it out of the shed, [5 times a week or so],
they worked OK. The only problem was the switches died quite
quickly.

It was only after rewiring, & fitting relays at the front of the
engine bay, that they became usable, like a jap car, without any
special attention.

Thanks for the support guys.I am more annoyed at being ripped off than with the car.I know 7's have a bad reputation and still love em.I paid the first garage who is an electrical specialist a lot of money for a job he has bodged. It was only a month ago and his shoddy work is showing up.I am not sure whether to go all PMT on the guy or big eyes and tears. It depends on how much the guy Bulls me[:p]

Do it calmly & quietly. You never know, he may plead guilty & make good. Besides, tantrums never work when you are short. [:D]

We have agreed to disagree about my complaint.I went in and waited in the queue nicely as the garage is also a walk in shop for spares. The owner waved hello in a 'here comes my week in the carribean' kind of way and called me to the front to say hello."how are you and your lovely car?" he says. I told him calmly but rather loudly that it was not as healthy as I thought it should be and I had a engineers report to discus with him about his work.He tried to make me go into the back office to talk but I was going nowhere.I wanted his customers to be around for his discomfort. He tried to say that my other garage was wrong and he should re check his work, then he tried to say that I had took the car away a month ago and only came back now, then he tried to ignore me and push me to the door.I said quite firmly "TAKE YOUR HANDS OFF ME" That got the shops attention and a couple of men in the queue asked if all was OK.I pointed out the owners own small print on his recipt to him 'all work gaurenteed for 3 months' and told him that no way was he going to bodge my car again. With my audience watching he changed mood again and asked how can we resolve this then? I suggested a refund. He laughed and walked away.I shouted "shall I contact trading standards then?" He said "you do that love, good luck" I won't of course but I had moan and felt better.Good news is my car will finaly be A1 by next friday. If anyone should see a red DHC next weekend on the hard shoulder stop and give me a push please .

Why not, they are very helpful? They will probably advise putting your complaint in writing and, if you paid by credit card and it was over £100, copy the letter to the card company. I had a problem with Comet and TS were very helpful. It did not directly resolve the problem with Comet as they are above UK law (they think), but the card company got involved and offered to pay (as they are jointly and severally liable).

To me it seems you should stick with the TR shop. If they are familiar with working on Triumphs, I would assume they should be handle most any aspects of repair. I know you are across the pond but I suspect things may be somewhat similar. Horror stories abound over here with people taking these old classics to general repair shops used to dealing with new vehicles. Not your fault though and I hope I don't sound that way. If a shop isn't familiar with old car work, they should say they can't do it. Unfortunately, there are bussinesses that won't refuse a job, even if they are learning as they go.

I have a story if interested. If not that's OK.[:D] It's a bit long.

I had a nice lady's TR6 here last spring. I had been selling some parts to the general repair shop working on it. Guy kept calling me for info. He had done a valve job & some other repairs but couldn't get it to run properly so I ended up with it. Went through the carbs which one of his employees had rebuilt. Found a float full of gas so replaced them. Ran fine for a few minutes then was starving for fuel. Turned out the idiot had siliconed a fuel fitting. Little silicone worms all nestled in the needle valves. I must have had the carbs off & on three times before getting them right. She seemed very satisfied and I did some other small repair jobs for her.

Well, the car was still blowing blue smoke. What's she do? Takes it back to the same guy for a complete engine overhaul!! He calls me this spring to say he doesn't think the carbs are right..running rich. This is while the engine is still at the machine shop so don't know how he came to the conclusion. I agreed to look at them once more as he had them off the engine. Didn't see any problem with the floats so told him come & get em. Lady calls me all flustered about what she should do. I politely told her that she had the oportunity to bring her work to me but chose to go back to the fella that bodged the first job. I'm sorry but a guy is making a couple thousand $$ (at least) doing an overhaul and I'm going to fine tune it for him? I don't think so. To add insult, during our conversation, she told me her ex had backed into it with his tractor. Guess who got the job of fixing it? Not me.

Steph, first of all, I'm not suggesting this story relates to your situation. Just my advise that if you can find a good TR specialist, stick with them. Of course fixing it yourself is always better if you can handle the job.[:D]

You can always file a small claim at the county court.

The website link which explains the process is: http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/info ... /index.htm

He's inconvenienced you and you could pay back the compliment!
