SD1 rearend halfshafts

Has anyone shortened Rover SD1 rearend halfshafts and fitted them to a tr7/8 rearend?

Why would you want to do that? They are the same as the ones that are already there 'pre-shorted' courtesy of the Triumph factory...

OK, I see.
I think the shafts are waist'd, so shortening and re-splining them might be problematic. I'll have to check the pictures I have (somewhere...)
of the axle I slaughtered to get the 2.84 CWP out of. I'll get back if I manage to find the old pictures...

Odd,

actually i acquired two sets of shortened Sd1 halfshafts (one set damaged and the other okay)for free after i purchased the sd1 brake rotors and calipers . The guy i got them from switch to a ford rearend.

i just trying to see if anyone has done this with or without any problems.

my plans are to adapt the car to the five bolt pattern using parts of the sd1 and tr7 spindle assemblies.

I have a grinnall axle (five stud) and also the front
hubs (with bigger brake calipers and new discs) for sale

i would love to, but the wife would have my head. See tells me i must use what i have first. i have the shorten SD1 shortened axles and the complete front strut assemblies, all i have to do now is modify them to adapt to my tr7.

i have figured out how to adapt the SD1 rear taillights to my car, so i will have pseudo Grinnall (not really).


working on my car rotessorie now (hopefully will be done with it in a few weeks).

SD1 shafts are not the same. That being said yes they use the same outer bearing sise and spline count and well, the obviouse difference in length but beonde that the basic shape is different. The 7 and I think the 8 used both identical shafts and have a bell shaped ( best I can describe) macined just shy of the bearing mountind point while the SD1 shafts are macined straight at that point just inside the bearing mount. The overall thickness is greater on the SD1 shaft also not that it realy maters as they both end up at the same thickness at the spline anyway. With all that said, yes you can have them shortened. I had mine done by a shop just outside of Montreal for $500 they do them for dirt track cars all the time and say they rarly have any problems. I talked with my brother who races in the DIRT series and he knew them straight off and gave me the thumbs up. They machine the slines which is not as strong as the originals which he said appeared to be rolled but more than sufficient for anything we could through at them. They softened the metal recut and then heat treated them (at least that's what I was told) The weak link would appear to be the diff.

To sum up, yes they are slightly different. It will give you five bolt ( I followed up by using the SD1 rear drums 2 1/4" X 9"dia as opposed to 1 3/4" X 9"dia offset is unafected as the backing plate is dished more and the drum has a flater face to make up the 1/2" difference) maybe a bit weaker (nothing to worry about) Reasonable cost for the work involved.

Bendder,

thanks for the info, most of it i knew or assumed. mainly the heat treating is what i assumed. i don't think it was done to the halfshafts i have after looking at the other untouched SD1 halfshafts i have. the person i got these from had them in tr7 with a modified SD1 engine (just cam and carb mods).

see picture links below, the first picture shows two halfshafts one damaged and the other not. the other picture shows the spline damage to the one halfshaft.

It looks like i"ll be getting the good set spline area heat treated before i install them.
