Never full tank

Postby nofinchance » 28 Mar 2009 14:43

After my month wait 99% of my electrics now work as they should[:D].My pesky fuel gauge is new and moves from off the dial to 0 when the ign is on however it will not show the level of fuel in the tank[:(!].The mechanic says he has tested it and the gauge is fine .I am told it is the tank sender.(don't know why they didnt just mend it,maybe the dribbling guy in the straight jacket had given up)I have orderd a sender unit(and loads of stuff) from my spanking new 'Rimmer Bros' catalouge(mmmmmmm TR parts...better hide the credit card statement next month!).How do I get at the sender to fit it? The haynes comic shows a kinda upside down pic and states 'remove sender' Thanks mr Haynes[:o)]

The tank sender is simple enough to remove & replace, but a bit messy as the tank must be drained first (or drive the car till the fuel level is as low as possible).

Get the back of the car up on axle stands. Have some containers handy. You will see the sender unit at the bottom of the tank. Pull off the 3 electrical connectors. Pull off the rubber fuel pipe & drain into your containers. (NO SMOKING[:D]). Tap the locking ring anti-clockwise to release it, remove the locking ring, then draw out the sender & remove the sealing gasket.

Refit by reversing the above, use a new sealing gasket. Don't forget to put the electrical connectors back on, green/black to terminal T, green/orange to terminal W, black to earth.

Job done[:D]

Hi,
Jack the car up, the higher the better, use axle stands. The tank sits above the axle, the tank unit faces the rear bulk head ie. towards the front of the car. It is held in by a ring that you need to tap round with punch all something similar then wanggle the unit out, always replace the seal. Run the tank as low as you can on fuel, bu663r me does that stuff smart if you get it in the eye [B)] and not a good idea to have a lead light under there or do in a poorly ventlited garage [xx(]. Not a bad idea to fit new fuel hose at the same time as these have a habit of leaking. Also check the connections and wiring as they sit out in the open there.
Cheers John

Hi,
Got hail and all sorts here, been in consevatory (nice and warm) putting disc brakes on my 'new' back axle (great being divorced [:p] although daughters moan about the gear oil smell [^]) and then nipping on here when caffeine needs topping up!!!
Price for repairs not bad for repair work on your car Steph, we charge £100 +vat an hour labour at work [:0][:0][:0] but BMW drivers can afford that [:p]
cheers John

Realy john![;)]I wonder if the car parts in the house was a factor in your split[;)][:)].I draw the line at bits in my house as I tend to be clumsy and drop stuff on white cushions!I still tread things in though like lumps of grease[:(!] so I may as well give in be warm and comfy and just get my tools out in the lounge [8D].The hammer is my fave a result every time......Not always the desired one though[:0].I think that my repair bill was not bad now I have given the work a good looking at.I just wish they had completed the job still my fault for being vauge"just check it all and mend what you need to"I am very pleased with my new blade type fuse box.He had to do it realy as the original melted along the way and the three used ones he tried were just as rubbish as my burned unit.I count myself lucky it was not £100 per hour eh.Even at that service cost BMW indicaters still don't work he he.[:X]

Hi Steph,
There has been a few posts on here over the years on blade conversions for the fuse box, a great idea and does away with those ever increasing hard to get hold off glass fuses. Plus hopefully keep your smoke in the wiring loom instead of it leaking out!! Something for me on the 'to do' list.
Cheers John

If, after you've replaced the sending unit, the gauge still doesn't read full, you might try manipulating the needle a tad. My gauge was reading only 3/4, and as I had a couple of spare gauges, I experimented by moving the needle by hand to the right, and then just past its stopping point. VERY GENTLY, please! Now reading correctly, and it has been several months.

Maybe I got lucky... [?]

Thanks mickey.I hope my brand new gauge is ok and the sender will rectify this problem. It moves from off the clock at the left to 0 with ignition on but will not rise any more. All I have to do now is wait for the box of parts to arrive and get down and dirty[}:)]

nofinchance,

As mentioned make sure you have a new hose and jubilee clips. I was going to change my fuel gauge today on my TR8, but after cleaning the connection to the sender all ok now. I check the steel tank fro rst at the same time. I did notice the fuel sender pipe fitted was longer than the one purchased.

So would have required a longer fuel hose?

Its Not to bad a job, if the tanks is solid.

Jim
