Which club?

Postby MrT » 09 Mar 2009 18:28

I'm thinking of joining one, but was just wondering who's a member of what, and what you think of it? As I'm a huge fan of all things Triumph, having owned Heralds, Dolomites, FWD's, 2000's and Acclaims in the past, I'm leaning more towards Club Triumph at the moment, rather than a more specific TR club. Any thoughts?

Hi Mr T,
For TR7 / 8 you have go a long way to beat the TR Drivers Club (TRDC) IMHO, great magazine, great people, great national meet (up at Billing so on your door step! ), great discount on insurance in fact just great [8D] Have met some great like minded people through the club.
Also a member of the TR Register but have been put of the social scene by a couple incidents of snobbrey (and they drink beers with bits in it, that get stuck in there beards, whilst wearing flat caps and driving gloves, joking [;)] ), although in fairness they appear to improved a lot of recent, helped by people such as Wayne on here.
Want to try and go along to a Club Triumph this year with Gordon and see what they are all about. If you fancy it and its ok with Gordon, we can take a drive up now the weather is better and evenings pulling out when they have a meet, i think its Northamton way he goes [?]
I am sure someone else will be along shortly praising another club but its the TRDC for me.

Cheers John.

The TRDC IS the wedge based and best, but if you do join one of the
'lesser'clubs-prepare to be ignored, snubbed, laughed at when they learn
you have the best and last great Triumph ever built!I know where my
affiliations lay-TRDC.

See ya. Paul

If you are somewhere near Billing, as suggested by John 215, you're both welcome to join me and the others at the Northants and Leics Club Triumph meet any month (first Tuesday of the month). I mainly go to that one as it's generally more convenient for me than the one at Hitchin even though they are both about the same distance from me. That and that they are a great bunch of people who have their own runs and go to a lot of local (and not so local) events too. Also I like the wider range of cars at CT meets although I am a 7/8 fan myself. I think that it is probably more important that the club you go to are poeple you can get on with and do things you want to do than anything else. Anyone's welcome to come along a few times and see how you get on - no need to join first. Let me know if you're interested

Absolutely no way will you be snubbed , laughed at etc at Club Triumph.

As you may guess I am very pro Club Triumph but to be fair, think what you want from a club. If interested in all things Triumph then yes CT scores. Also if you want to drive your car more actively than perhaps the norm then CT is the one for you too.

Depending on where you are tho you may well find CT does not have a local area near you (if that's your thing).

As you know Gordon I would listen to him tho [;)]

Now - to make sure you understand my bias here - I am a main CT committee member, CT Northern Area Co-ordnator and the CT Rallies Bod - hence this Youtube clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DTp2pxOl0Y

Interesting points raised there - thanks.

I'm still 'keenest' on Club Triumph at present - the 'bit of everything' side of it is really appealing.

John & Gordon - that sounds like the makings of a plan for maybe the April meet (Tuesday 7th)? We'll have to sort it out nearer the time.

I'm a member of the:

TR Drivers Club - unrivalled TR7/8 support, friendliness, comaraderie and enthusiasm. Great set of people and an interesting magazine - but a severe lack of events to go to (only 1 of note, National Weekend at Billing Aquadrome in July).

TR Register - Now THE club for younger TR enthusiasts because of the TR Yoof group - huge calendar of events and tours such as International at Malvern, Lakes Tour, Le Mans tours, Scottish Isles tours, camping weekends and motorsport and probably the best magazine. Depends on local group to a certain extent, but good wedge support overall.

Club Triumph - The 'club that does'is their moto and that just about sums it up, if your into using your TR to the max rather than polishing and walking round shows this is the club for you as they run the most amazing events such as "Round Britain Run" 2,000 miles in 48 hrs, Historic Counties Run and 10 countries run.Their forum is like a constant bar brawl however!

TSSC Has a great local scene but caters the least for TR's really, depends what your local group is like. Large calendar of fun camping weekends and the massive International Weekend at Stafford are worth it at least.

I enjoy being a member of them all as each has their own benefits. For me TSSC has the best local scene in my area, TR Register has the best national scene and events calendar and Club Triumph have been responsible for some of the most memorable drives of my life. TRDC is unrivalled for friendliness and technical support on wedges.

Hope that gives an insight...

By the sounds of it Club Triumph sounds the best bet for you...

i've never been a club triumph member and agree with Wayne.s comments on their forum having had a bar brawl [8D]myself

i have to say Wayne has put over a very honest opinion of the clubs as they stand, and agree the Register's opinion change from local club to club,

But for outright TR7/8 support there is only the TR Drivers club

i would say though i would like to see more inter club events being attended any Triumph if your a member or not, As the same cars week in week out at any club meet can get rather tedious

The Adventurous Activity Weekend in Essex - 31st July to 2nd August is also not to be missed. Remember that you're more than welcome to come to either of our "national" events or indeed local meetings even if you're not a member.

I have been a member of the TSSC in the past, but found them very lacking in any support or interest in the 7. I know too little about the TR Register to make a meaningful comment.

I am currently a member of TRDC & Club Triumph. CT are very active in terms of both local groups & national events, I took part in the CT 2008 Round Britain Run & must say it was great fun (if rather exhausting!). I am not particularly into their social scene but have made a few acquaintances over the years.

The CT Forum? Well it is a busy place & they had a few problems a while ago with some argumentative members, but sorted I believe now. As is always the way, a couple of people make waves & the whole thing gets a reputation. Anyway, it is not compulsory to use the CT forum!

TRDC are a very friendly club, with IMHO unrivalled knowledge & expertise for the TR7/8. Not so strong on local groups but there are some get togethers of local members.

I think it boils down to what you want from your club membership. Or be like many of us & belong to more than one[:)]

But I think John has the right idea - in these days of stagnant membership numbers, and a generation of younger people who know no little or nothing of the Triumph marque, more cooperation & even some kind of affiliation between Triumph car clubs would surely be productive.

Don't know if it is general or just us but certainly the local CT meet is pretty informal and I can't ever recall anyone even being asked if they are CT members let alone put under pressure to join. All are welcome to come along if they have an interest in Triumphs. There is also a lot of co-operation between CT and TSSC locally (the Hitchin meet is a joint one) and all are made welcome there too (at least I was the one time I actually made it).

To be honest I think that there is a fair amount of co-operation between the clubs which is good. I know I have previously felt uncomfortable when at a meet of a club at which I was not a member but I think that was because of me feeling guilty not becuase of any attitude coming from the others there.

At my local CT area I do ask if people are CT members but that's only because I run a CT member of the year championship.

Absoluteley anyone can attend - even MG owners[:D]

I made approaches to the driver's club to join our meetings and did co-organsie a joint area meeting with the 2000 Register in West Lancs for a while but, to be honest, no CT members ever turned up!

So, I just concentrate on the Pendle and Pennine Area which is thriving.

Regarding the CT Forum - yes there have been some "difficult" people who are now pretty much gone thanks to a good team of moderators.

It is still very lively tho[:D]
