Were Exactly?

Postby jclay (RIP 2018) » 21 Jan 2009 19:11

I know that the serial number is suppose to be on the boot drip rail, but I have never been able to find it!! Where exactly is it located?

Also, didn't all TR8s have the battery located in the boot? The TR8 I just bought has a battery tray just like my TR7.

As far as I know, the only TR8s that "might" have the battery up front would be the pre-production coupes (FHC from around 1978).

Yuppers. As far as i can remember the batteries in TR8's were all located in the trunk, even the FHC prototypes. Both my previous TR8's still had the battery trays, but if I remember right, the carbon canister's were bolted to them.

The # I cant find on my current TR7's, maybe because they are both 1979's? My TR7 Spider and both TR8's had a number stamped in the trunk (boot) drip well. I think the #'s were stamped on the Passanger side (right side), but i cannot remember.

Even thought the battery was in the boot, the battery tray was still retained in the enginebay, just not used.

If the VIN is in the boot drain channel it will be on the right hand side looking at the car from the rear. If not there have a look around the front turret, i have seen them stamped there before.

The stamped VIN# on the boot drip rail/trunk is only on the the 1981 and later TR7s & 8s but not on all of them and sometimes the numbers did not even match in a few rare cases. I have had 2 coupes ACN000XX, ACN010XX preproduction and two retail TCN 1979s coupes and a convertable. They all have the battery in the boot/trunk.

Well, it is a true TR8 and I believe I could rebuild it, but the state will not give me a title. The car is listed for demolishing or parts only!

So, I will get it home next week and start taking the parts off to put on one of my TR7s and I will just have to <i>"settle"</i> for a TR7V8! It does have a full set of original alloy wheels with caps, but it looks like the clear coat is gone. I will be selling those as I have Panasports to go on the 7V8 and the Spider has alloys as does the Iguana TR7.

I am pretty sure that the engine in the receiver car is locked-up but it does have a 5-speed in it as well as the 5-speed I have in the storage shed and another 2 lt engine setting in the back yard.

I will be posting photos of both cars as I will be getting rid of the interior pieces as well. I will probably be putting them on eBay, but I will give you the first option.

Well, I suppose that's it, Oh and tell the zombies, their blocked too!

Well, if they won't give you a registration, you could always find a wrecked TR8 somewheres that has a registration and transfer the vin numbers to your TR8. No?

jclay, is this the flood car? Yes battery should be in the trunk. On the 8s the front tray is used to house some carbon canisters & junk for the evaporitive emission system, as far as I remember. Mine are long gone. If it's the same car we talked about before, you did say it had some DPO repairs. Perhaps someone moved the battery up front?
Congrats on the acusition anyhow. Given the prices TR8s go for over here, I wouldn't sweat having a "real" one. Only way they seem to bring any decent money is if they are bone stock, low mile, originals. Who wants one of those? Not Me! [}:)]

My Vin number is on the right hand side rain channel above the battery - has your car been painted several times and just covered the numbers up?

My car was built in October 1979

Mine is in the top of the left hand, [from the rear] front
suspension tower, right where I stamped it, with some borrowed
punches, before I re-registered the car.

In Queensland they have got much tighter with identification
recently, & will no longer accept riveted on ID plates, for cars
where the original title has been lost. They want to see the vin
stamped in the body.

Our cars do not keep the rego number for life. We have to surrender
the plates, if the thing falls out of rego. It is then registered
with a new number when re-registered.

Our system can usually find the cars history with the old rego
number, but can not find anything with the vin. With my first 7, it
took almost a month for it to be registered due to this problem, as
I could not prove ownership. I might still be trying if I had not
found it had been sold, at auction, 3 owners previously. Auction
sales are granted clear title here, although I can't imagine why.

So in Qld, try very hard to get an unregistered cars old
registeration number. If they have that, a stamped vin, & no report
of the car being stollen, it goes straight through.

Yes, this is the flood car.

No, the State says it is for "Demolition or Parts Only" so no title. I am no longer worried about the serial number as I do have a good car that I was going to use for a TR7V8 anyway! It will just be cheaper now, as I don't have to buy all new parts to do the conversion.

It is Burgundy now, but I am going to take it back to the original color, Poseidon Green. Now, since I already have a Poseidon Green TR7 with alloy wheels, do I make the new car to match my 7 or do I dig out the Panasports and ground effects and put that on the TR7V8? I could add one of those big hooking spoilers like Lanocha has on his TR8!

So, do I go stealth or FAT?

I did check the TR8 I am working on for a friend and it does have the battery tray with the carbon canisters sitting on it. Speaking of the TR8, my thanks goes out to all of you guys who helped me get the wiring straight. The car starts up from the key now, no jumping the starter! Since it has just headers installed and one of Woody's wicked cams, it roars like a Big Dog!!

Speke cars do not have the vin stamped on the body.
