New TR7 owner. Little help needed

Postby gsm cars » 04 Jul 2008 22:22

Just got a 1979 TR7 Convertible. Quick introduction my name is Geoff I now live in Albrta, Canada 11 years ago I moved here from Stroud, Gloucestershire. The TR7 has very little rust, engine is ok but the electrics are a mess. Temp gauge is not working it looks like the temp sender wire is off. What colour wire is it? I have a loose wire hanging down by the engine looks like green and another colour!
If some one would give me the wire colour it is a start. Hope to get a workshop manual soon. I would like to run the car this summer then get most of the work done in the winter.
Thanks for your help

Welcome Geoff, where in Alberta do you reside? I'm in Calgary. I'd have to take a look at the car to let you know what wire's your talking about. I'll be in the garage tomorrow and we'll see if I can figure it out.

Can't save them all but I am trying!!!

If connectng the wire doesn't work replace the temp sender. Temp gauge was the only gauge not working when I picked up my 7. Replacing temp sender fixed the problem. You can test it by measuring resistance change as it sits in different temperature water.

I have lots of other electrical problems but one at a time. Indicators not working, Head lights will not turn off, headlight pod not working, Fueal gauge not working, Clock not working, Plus some other issues I am not aware of. I hate when ametuer electrical previous owners have a go at fixing stuff I then have to go in and find out what and why they did it. Oh the joys of owning older cars,

It's not just older cars, where TR7's are concerned the electrics were not much more reliable when they were new!

The turn indicator switches all seem to be breaking at the same place. If you pull the switch lever towards the steering wheel too far, a little piece of plastic will break out and you will lose the homing position for the switch and the lever will be really sloppy in it's movements.

Trying pushing the switch lever away from the steering wheel as someone else watches the head lights. If they go out, then that piece of plastic has broken in the unit and fallen out. I tried to put a piece of tape in between the contacts that "Flash" the headlights but it was almost impossible to fit the tape in. I ended up removing one of the contact and ordered a new switch.

For the indicators & headlight problems, try cleaning the earths which are bolted to the bottom of the engine compartment behind each headlight. While you are in there, pull apart & use contact cleaner on the various connectors there.

If no improvement, take out the headlamp master switch from the dash & clean the contacts in there too.

Fuel gauge might be stuck fuel sender in the tank, rather than electrical problem. Quite a common problem, especially if the car has been sat for a while - the sender float tends to get stuck in one position.

Where is the fuel tank sender? I have only had a quick look around and I have not yet put on the ramps to have a good look underneath apart for checking for rust which it has none to speak of. The TR7 has sat for two years and I am slowly cleaning it up. Lots of projects to play with.

Geoff, welcome from me too. The sender is in the center front of the tank.

Try cleaning the contacts, & the earth, at the tank, & the fuse.
They often give trouble, if the car has been idle for a while.

The sender is in the bottom of the tank, held in place by a retaining ring. If you get under the car you can see it - there are the electrical connections for the gauge & the fuel pipe coming from it. You can check/clean the gauge connections easily.

If your car has sat for 2 years then I would bet the sender is stuck - with the ignition on does the gauge move to any position, or does it not move at all? It's quite easy to change the sender but drain out as much fuel as you can BEFORE taking the sender out!

I have the temp gauge working it was a broken wire in the engine bay and the terminal was broken on the sender. I just soldered a length of wire with some heat shrink for strengh and all is well. One down fuel gauge is next along with the indicators. Found one of the electrical problems behind the switch panel a mouse had made a nest in their and chewed on the wires I need to repaire them as well. So it goes on.
