If you can find a small ship, bring some of those wedges to Oz.

We did not get DHCs, so our only DHCs are after market imports. I
have never seen a reasonable one, [remember ours are mostly rust
free] for less than A$7500, & thats for an import, to be restored.

You will not get a good FHC, registered, roadworthy, [MOT], with
good paint for much under A$5500.

A really nice FHC 7V8 will bring A$15,000, & DHC up tp A$20,000.

I have seen fully restored & beautiful, TR8 DHCs at over A$30,000.

With the present exchange rate, A$20,000 is about US$18,500, so I
think we must appreciate our 7s more than you lot. It could show,
that the average Ozy has better taste than others, except you find
that the average Ozy has never heard of a TR7. So I guess it shows
some of us are mad.

Have to admit this is why I brought the Grinnall to Oz. Got it for less than Au$5000, and with the added freight/duty etc its landed cost is still far less than any TR7V8 I have seen for sale here.

Australians have a love affair with the V8 and the noisier the better!

I see Classic Car mag say 3000 pounds is about the limit for a good TR7.

Well, as far as I can remember as I don't have the exact details with me, here goes:

(Costs in AU$)

Depending on where the car is in the UK, transport to the dock to me was horrendous = $700

Freight, I chose to use a car ship rather than a container which worked out to cut the cost by half = $1600

Then at this end (Australian) they are waiting to rip you off at every corner as you are in a corner so to speak, but a lot depends on what value customs place on the car as all charges are a % of that value.

From what I learnt, the value is a mix of what you paid for it in the UK, as you have to provide a receipt, and what the going values are of the model on the Oz market. From this they charge 10% duty of what they believe the value is.

From that value, the freight company charge for many things as a % of the given value. My charges were around $2000

On top of all charges/duty in 10% GST on TOTAL VALUE INCLUDING FREIGHT costs!

Once you are through that, a complience plate is needed, $500.

After that and assuming no modifications are needed, which is unlikely on a pre 1988 model, then you are allowed to drive it to get a road worthy certificate $100.

After that, then the old rego $360ish.

My car was valued at $13000 by customs by the way. I haven't seen a good V8 for under $20k, however I suspect it may take sometime to sell. As Hasbeen states, the TR7 is not as well known as others.

The plus side is that it is a V8 Grinnall and is LOUD!!

Hope this helps

Jerry

So it would have cost you about the same as you paid for the car. Its a nice car and would be the only Grinnal in OZ so well worth it get's you thinking is it worth doing a V8 conversion by the time you buy parts and spend the time on it. It would be cheaper to import one allready done and ready for the road and you find it hard to get a DHC here very few about.

Just a bit more but yes you are correct. I had quite a bit of work done on the car before it left, which did not affect the value as the costs did not show on any of the official paper work required.

I agree re the V8 sourced from the UK as not only on cost but expertise as well. There is much more Triumph know-how in the UK.
Having said that, the beauty of the Rover V8 is that it is a well supported engine in Australia in part due to Land Rover.

I'm very pleased with the performance of my car given the age. Front end stone chips erk me as do rattling windows when the roof is down, which it is ALL the time!

Cheers, Jerry

Just to comment on the import process, I brought my 4.6 V8 over from the UK when we moved here in late 2003. Initially it seemed fairly straightforward, but in practice, there were a few problems.

As far as the duty was concrened, I managed to persuade them that it was only worth a couple of thousand dollars so I ended up with a pretty small bill - about $200 I think. That was a pretty good deal because it's in great condition and it's currently insured for $20,000.

Getting the compliance certificate was intersting because the TR8 was only manufactured with a 3.5 so I needed specific approval for the 4.6; the certifying engineer eventually agreed to certify it based on the ratio of engine size to gross vehicle mass, but it was touch & go for a while. You can still get approval if it doesn't fit into the standard ratios, but it's a more involved and costly process. I didn't even mention the AP Racing front brake set-up...

Registering it proved to be the hardest part. The first Queensland Transport office I took it to didn't have a clue and told me I didn't have the right paperwork. That's not what you want to hear when you've shipped your car half way round the world, taken a train 300km to Brisbane on a Friday to pick it up and have to get back home ready to start a new job on the Monday! Arguing with them got me nowhere, so I then spent hours on the phone to the UK, various government departments and the local shippers to try to find the missing paperwork only to conclude that I did have it all and that the Queensland Transport office people were a bunch of idiots. Went to a different office on the Saturday and had it all registered in 30 minutes.

As a final twist, when I drove it home I started getting unusual noises from the rear end, which turned out to be loose wheel nuts. When you bring a car in to Australia, they have the underside steam cleaned to eliminate any non-indigenous organisms and it seems that they weren't too careful putting the wheels back on. Could have been nasty...
