Hi John,
Sound like a great job. Far from being a 'dumb arse' I would say proper mechanics such as yourself are highly skilled. Too much reliance on computers telling you what's wrong with a car these days. How are your woodwork skills for working on the Morgans!
Hope it all goes well, see you at Billing.

Aahhh. Was it the money that made you look elsewhere or other aspects of the job and the company's culture and values etc? If you stay, with the extra money you negotiate, are you going to regret staying in 3 to 6 months time because you feel like you did earlier?

It's going to be very personal to you John. The only thing I can suggest is taking a blank sheet of paper, divide it into 4 quarters and list the pro's of each job and the bad bits of each job. It helps take some of the emotion out of the decision process. Only you can value how important each item is to you and your overall gut feeling.

I've had to do this and it helped me make the move, despite being offered an increase to stay.

Good Luck,

Adam

My question in such a situation is, why didn't your current employer offer you a pay rise previously, if you were so valuable to them. If you feel it is simply they want to exploit their staff, I'd go. If you can see another reason, discuss it with them, before making your decision.

How do you think their new found desire to pay you more money would affect your relationship in the future if at all?

Hi,

Thanks for the advice gents, sort been mentally putting pro's and con's into boxes and don't bl88dy know :? !!!

Lot more travelling to new job 18 miles as opposed to 3 on a bicycle, worried my hobby becomes just a job, BMW's are far enough away from our car's that will never happen, back and knees after 35 year fixing cars are not the best, at the moment rarely have to do any engine and gearbox removals ( get the youngsters to do that )

BUT why are you suddenly worth so much when you threaten to leave, any ' deal ' I get can I trust them to honour it ??? I do respect the owner of the group who I spoke to on Friday, known him for years even owns some classics himself including a Z1, 2002 and a gorgeous Z8 all of which I am the only one who is allowed to work on, he is a genuine guy but the idiots below him far from the case :x , everyone else will know I have been given a good deal to stay and don't need the feeling that would cause, a lot is based around productivity figures they want everyone to sell at least 80% of hours attended, if you are spinning oil filters on and off, fitting clutches etc. this can be done with ease BUT buried up to your neck in electrical faults, stuff no one else can fix ie. problem jobs like I have too then near on impossible, other dealerships have their senior guys on a lower target but not us  they just threaten you with the sack

......I don't bl88dy know maybe go in there ask for a huge rise, a shorter week an a i8 company car ! ! Rant done !

Cheers John

The above seems to sum up the problem very nicely (the middle men and the bean counters).
Be honest to the owner and tell to him what you wrote above.
(of course find a good reason to drop in a few good reasons for some extra reward without it becoming to obvious).

And don't depend on trust, have every proposal written down.
Good luck and much wisdom with your choice

Been in a similar situation a few times. As a some have said; is it the money or the situation that made you look to leave. If it's the money go in for 10% more than you think you'd get away with, you'll be surprised. If it's the situation, then just leave - the extra money will just become a milestone around your neck later, it could also mean you'll get smaller future pay-rises and bonuses.

Picking up on Hasbeen's point, you've always been worth more money: most (all) companies will pay you as little as they think they can get away with. It will be just enough to stop too many people leaving as they don't want the cost of recruitment. Also new staff tend to come in on a slightly higher wage, as they have to tempt them away from where they currently work.

A couple of psych things to consider boiled down to sayings.

The devil you know versus the devil you don't.

"Cold feet" syndrome" exemplified by last minute departure of husband to be (or bride).

What kind of person are you? Some one who dwells on what might have been? Have you regretted passed decisions? (Excepting wondering about the road not travelled which is normal).

It is relatively normal behaviour to doubt the wisdom of changing course. Some people relish the idea and embrace it as facing a new adventure, some look at it with more trepidation. Ultimately only time will tell if it was the right one whether you take the left or the right road in the Y (to stay or to go).

If you are being paid less than you are worth, and living under constant threat of the sack, your decision should be easy.

I worked as a developer for a small Software company employing 20-25 people for 16 years, and they never operated in this mode.
They made it their business to ensure that everybody was paid what they deserved, never threatened the sack, but never shied away from dismissing someone who wasn't contributing.

Re the Morgan thread, some years ago, in a previous life, I arranged corporate events. One such occasion saw Charles Morgan bring a couple of cars to the centre, and he delivered a really interesting talk. Here he is at that event "doing a Woollard"...
