Also think that ATF should be OK for the avarage LT77 'box.
I used it for over 15 years in my wedges without any problems.

Only after doing CT's 10CR for the first time in 2005 I decided I needed some better gear oil.
After over 4000 km in just over 3 days and with only one longer stop to cool down the gear box became slightly noisy [:I]

Some Castrol Manual SMX-S sorted that, 'box has been fine since.
Only when cold the gear shift is a bit notchy.
For me that's not a problem as I tend to use the Triumphs for longer tours ...

Cold start off temeperature is certainly a factor. As ATF is a thinner lubricant, 'notchy' first to second gear shifts are not as noticeable as with standard 90wt or modern MTF fluids, which have are thicker in composition.

However, the converse holds true. Once either the gearbox has warmed up or the cold start of the day is above 60 degrees F., then the thinner ATF begins to lose it's one advantage over a modern MTF. This is a lesson I learned the hard way. Please, you do not have to learn it the hard way too.

Ouch! GBP 12.99 per litre!? Sounds expensive to me, and in parity with genuine GM stuff...
I paid roughly GBP 8.60 (including our 25% VAT) a bottle for the 12 bottles I bought (genuine US made/bottled stuff in 1 US quart bottles).

I agree with Mildred´s advice, specially for us in hotter climates. I'll upgrade with something better than ATF... Looking around for that Castrol SMX-S...
12.99 per l. expensive? Have a look at this... Must be some special signed and limited edition[:0]
It really pays to shop around!

That's RPI Engineering for you, big-time/well over priced in very much everything they sell.

Now come on, £26.00 [:0] plus p+p for a 1/ltr bottle is a total piss take I think [:(!] [:(!].

But...., it does mention 4 times in the advert that....
'this is for a BRAND NEW BOTTLE' [:D][:D][:D].

Sounds like I could start reselling Pennzoil bottles to all you guys
- and still make a profit for both of us on the bottles themselves.

But nah, [;)] shipping cost would kill it:
currently roughly GBP 30 to ship two bottles from Sweden to a EUropean address...

For the LT77 box you would need 2 bottles to do the job; that would add up to a whacking 52 pounds plus p+p for this liquid gold

Ah quite a familiar debate. Same thing happens on the MG forum when I state I have been running ATF in my MGB OD for well over 15 yrs. ATF in manual transmissions is nothing peculiar to BL and the LT77. Chrysler & GM recomended it for a 4spd OD box I once had. An interesting photo posted recently.

This car has a 383 SB Chevy with twin turbos. I'd venture to say a bit more power than a TR7 or even a Rover V8.[;)]

Having said that, I have been useing GM syncro in mine. I just call my dealer and have a couple bottles delived at my discounted price. I did previously run ATF and wouldn't hesitate to again if the GM stuff gets hard to get.

Beat the dead horse. Beat the dead horse.

Yes, my friends, and the above modern transmission was specifically designed for ATF lubrication. Ours were not. The BL/JRT boys jumped on ATF as a quick and cheap fix for the cold start shifting problems of the LT77. However, the LT77 was designed with tolerances designed for a thicker oil when at it's hot operating temperature. And, it was designed for a very wide range of applications, from 2500 pound sportscars to multi ton commercial and military vehicles with a maximum output of 300 flywheel horsepower. As such, with it's greater tolerances than now seen in modern gearboxes, the mixture that is a modern MTF now allows a more acceptable first-second gear shift when cold while providing the proper cushioning effect and lubrication of the gearbox internals when hot. Which was what was needed back in the 1970's when the LT77 was being designed.

Now has the dead horse been beaten enough?

A special, and off topic, request.

Can someone out there in computer land, please
tell me how to modify my settings to stop this
over wide layout(?) of the posting?

I thank you.

I don't know but believe it is my fault posting the photo. Sorry. Photobucket has somehow changed the size of what they call "full size" from what it once was. Why can't things be left alone?

Also FWIW, I am absolutely sure that automatic transmissions operate at a much higher temerature than any manual every made in history. Multiple clutch assmeblys, small planetary gear sets and not to mention the heat created by the torque converter. They all have some sort of cooler to help cope with the heat generated. I am at a loss as to how ATF somehow loses its lubricating properties as is warms up in a manual trans.

Decided to go with trv8 & Beans. Bought 2 pots of Castrol SMX-S. Cost £26 but cheaper than a knackered gearbox. Plus it's readily available at Halfords.

And I thought $12.95 was too high compared to jclay's $7.99 (for Pennzoil). Sometimes we don't know how good we got it.

Canadian money at par with US again[:)]
