Careful of towing, can wreck the gearbox due the the integral oil pump not being driven.

Don't forget to clean the wire to the solinoid. The starter comes out easy enough with the car up on jackstands if you have a place to work on it (except for '80 or newer cars with big Californian cat.) If you get a new starter I'd get a modern gear reduction starter. I pick up one from eBay for $186.00 although I've seen them over $260. Most distributors get it from same company that does the adapter.

They use a Nipon starter that lasts forever with only the solinoid con tacts needing replacing from arcing for a few bucks once every couple of decades. Greater starting torque using less battery and faster turning.

Thanks for the reminder on the towing. I was planning on getting a flatbed.

Gear reduction starter sounds like a good idea, thanks. It's a '79 CA model, and the cat is definitely the issue with starter access: had a hell of a time just cleaning the connections. If there's a bigger cat on the later ones I'd hate to see it! I've got a good mechanic who's reasonably priced, so I think he'll have an easier job on a lift than me with the jack stands.

Is there supposed to be a heat shield on the solenoid & starter? There isn't, which may be part of the problem. I think it may have cooked.

Yes the Cat which gets very hot and sits very close to starter could fry without it. When I put my gear reduction stater in I had to make a heat shield out of a sheet of aluminum as the old one wouldn't fit the smaller starter. I took a rough pattern from a chevy stater heat shield I saw at Lordco and mirror imaged it as it was for RHD side.

Early TR8 coupes had that same steering wheel.
