Differential Oil Seal

Postby REPLIC8 » 16 Feb 2010 17:59

How easy is it change the front oil seal on a 5 speed diff? I think it just pops out & then push a new one in but the factory workshop manual says you need a special tool to remove it & another one to put it back in. Is this right or can it be done with normal tools?

If it's the pinion oil seal UKC4995 then nothing special is required to remove and refit the seal. I did mine as per the Haynes manual.

My recon supplied 3.08 axle had a smear of silicon instead of a gasket fitted

Some silicone (RTV) on mine also as I didn't have the gasket at hand. No leaks. One of the nice features of these rear axles is being able to change that seal without disturbing the pinion preload.

BTW, I did mine with a block of wood, hammer and flat surface.
