oil drain plug

Postby nick » 09 Sep 2009 02:04

I buggered my oil drain plug. It was in so tight I had to use an extractor tool to get it out. I went to Schucks and Knetch's for a replacement. No luck. Who as a source?

Most parts stores should have a rubber / plastic 'universal' plug for situations like these. They aren't as secure as using a threaded metal plug, but until until you have the chance to fix it properly, it should keep the oil on the inside.

A quick question; Were the threads in the oil pan hole also damaged, or was it just the plug itself that was damaged? As for the plug, it is a common pipe thread plug that should be easy to find over the hill at your local hardware store.

If the oil pan drain hole threads are damaged, I recommend the more difficult repair which entails removal of the pan itself, having a machine shop weld up the hole, then rethread to the original size. Yes, I know it is an expensive proposition, yet in the long run this permanent repair will not keep you up at night worrying about the cheap & cheerful quicky fix.
