Doesn't sound like the bump stops to me, sound like it is either the mounting holes on the bulkhead where the rear links fit too are elongated and the bolt is moving around in the hole or the front rear lower link bushes are shot.

I had a strange one with this type of noise.

It was in the 4.6L TR8, which has a ZF auto, from the V8 BMW.

Every time you applied, or closed the throttle, even if only gently,
there was a clunk from the trailing arms.

Everything was in excelent order, with near new poly bushes, & all
brackets good, & new spacers.

After much mucking around I finally discovered that the trailing arm
bolts should have thick washers. I found this in a January 1977
Leyland Repair Operation Manual. When I took the ones off my 7, &
swapped them with the 8, the noise stopped in the 8, &
started in the 7, when the thin ones were fitted to it.

After I returned those to the 7, I made up some thick washers for
the 8, & have not had the noise again.

I can only assume that the urethane bushes I am using require a good
end load to prevent movement.

The thin, [normal looking washhers for that size] washers were bent
concaved, by the pressure on the bolt, & its nut. This may be
because during my attempts to find/stop the clunk, I has put a fair
load on the bolts.

This is a cool web page that can calculate speedo error according to changes in tyre size, gearbox & axle ratios.

As for the bump, check the bolts thu the bushings. the tank installer may have tighten them when the axle was in full drop.

Also have a look at the bolts on the driveshaft in case he disconnected it. I had a TR6 that the bolts on one halfshaft were a little loose and it would clunk on startout. At first I thought it was the dreaded rear end mounts but snuged down the bolts and it was gone.

Sorry for the delay I have a picture now of gearbox and axle part no's.The gearbox is a bit blurry though as although the car was on axle stands I was in a hurry to get out from underneath[xx(].I have orderd the large and small bump stops and have been fighting all week in my spare moments to fit the remaining parts of my tan interior. My next project is a time machine so I can go back and punch the guy on the nose who did not use 10 m/m bolts for the seats but hex head ones that no ratchett or will fit so you have to pull the hex head drive round with a spanner[:(!].And what is wrong with a moulded carpet set? The jigsaw was a puzzle.Still the quirks make the car fun.[img][/img] [img][/img]

Hi Steph,
The seat bolts are Torx headed, they are similar to allen screws But you must use the correct size or can be a b1tch to remove, get along to Hellfords and get your self a 'T 40'socket, i have a Torx bit set that you use in a spanner which makes it even easier, i can post to you if you get stuck [?]
Cheers John

I replaced one Torx head screw with an Allen head because that's all they had at the industrial bolt place. It is easier to remove/tighten with allen keys.

I hope the concourse police never find out.[:p][:p]

Thanx guys .The trouble was the rear bolts were seized on my donor car so I rounded off my T30 head[:(!].They were ground out for me by the garage owner who was stripping the car.On fitting my old seats came out after a stuggle as I had them out only weeks before to fit the carpet and so on from my Tan set less seats. The headache was fitting the new seats as the rear bolts would do up ok with loads of access but the fronts even with the seats right back were always just under the front of the seat.So I could get my T30 head on but no room to fit a ratchet to turn it so you have to pull it round a mm at a time with a 10 mm spanner.Still its done now and the car looks as I want.Back to topic I am missing bump stops so that will help but I need to check the mountings of the axle if s/s are correct and the bolts are stressed. And I need to get the speedo reading rite still none the wiser on that? Thanx all for the info.
