Pinion oil seal replacement

Postby busheytrader » 17 May 2009 15:15

Hi,

My rear axle is weeping slightly from the front gasket and I've got a replacement pinion oil seal, gasket and a well thumbed Haynes manual in the garage.

Haynes says to soak the seal in oil a couple of hours before fitting it. After my lost hours replacing the gearbox extension bushes, has anyone run into troubles replacing this oil seal?

Thanks,

Adam

That applies for the 4-speed rear axles. Do they have leather oil seals?
Doesn't apply for the 5 speed axles, just lubricate the seal before fitting.

Nice design feature of the 5 spd axle is you don't have to worry about upseting the pinion preload to change the seal. Just remove the nut holding the pinion yoke, slip it off, remove the flange with the seal (4 bolts) & reverse. Just put some lube on the seal lip, no need to soak.
