Gear selector bush change problems.

Postby andyf » 12 Feb 2009 08:15

I finally managed to change the bushes on the gear selector to stop the rattling gear lever (my god what a difference - it`s like a new gearbox) and another problem has raised its head.

I have a whine that I assume is from the gearbox - the best way I can describe it is like an older non synchro car reversing, but quieter. It appears to be linked to engine revs.

I only had time for a very quick 2 minute drive so it is difficult to pinpoint position etc. Could it be anything that we did, or is it coincidence.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Hi Andy,

I had similar problems when I did the bushes on my car last year, in the end I ended up udjusting the big "R" shape spring thing so that the gear stick was able to sit properly in its correct position.
Do you know if the noise dissappears it you hold the gearstick or just change its position slightly?

Cheers
Ian

Andy, is the noise there when the car is sitting, with the engine
running, in neutral? If it is, check you have the 1" thick, 2"
diameter, steel spacer, between the rubber gearbox mount, & the
gearbox.

If this is missing, as it is on many 7s, when the rubber mount is
getting soft, the gearbox can sit on the subframe.

When this happens, all the normal mechanical noise, from the box, is
transmitted to the subframe, & then resonates throughout the body,
giving the impression of major problems.

I have had this in 2 of my 7s, when I bought them. I hope this is
your problem, as it is both a cheep, & quick, thing to fix.

Ian, I will check the lever and see if it makes a difference. What do you mean by the r shape spring thing - my brain isn`t working this morning.

Hasbeen, yours is probably the best shout as I changed the gearbox mount at the same time, as the old one was shot. I honestly cannot remember there being a spacer there, so that may be favourite. I think the noise was there when the car was stationary, but not as obvious (which I guess makes sense?)

This "R" shaped Spring. It is what returns the shifter to the neutral position between 3rd & 4th.

Andy, If you have just replaced the rubber mount it's less likely
that the box would be sagging down onto the subframe.

Jclay's pics shows all the metal bits, [ on the checkered background]
including that spacer, that go with the rubber bit, to make up the
full gearbox mount, so check if any of these are missing on yours.
