Colour of factory alloys.

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

Colour of factory alloys.

Postby MikeRotherham » 28 Dec 2014 09:54

Does anybody know the colour that the factory fitted alloys were supplied in.
I'm looking to get mine refurbished in the new year and wondered if there was a paint code that I could give the wheel refurbisher rather than use trial and error.

Regards
Mike.

Mike, the original colour is similar to platinum, however I had some done in the correct colour and they look dull. Now I ask for the brightest silver possible but not chrome.

I had mine colour matched from an original alloy as they are not just silver as Chris has stated, I used the specialist wheel company I'm Nottingham and the finish is fantastic, I think I paid £50 a wheel to be refurbished

The TR8 alloy has a slight greenish tinge to them. The Spider alloys are standard silver colour sometimes called argent. If you put them side by side it is quite noticeable but when standing alone, not so much. As to paint code you could shoot it with a scanner and see what it comes up with if no one has an actual code. Personally I like the Spider colour better but if you're trying to match for originality's sake......

I have never come across an actual pint code t=for the standard alloy. When I compare my TR7 alloys that still have the original finish in good condition against repainted ones on other peoples cars, I always find the refinished wheels are too bright & silvery, if that's a correct term!

The original finish was quite understated & dull, as Chris has mentioned, so it depends on whether you want originality or a bit of sparkle!

By the way I think the Spider alloys were actually a different shade of silver, IIRC the part number was suffixed with S (for Spider?) to distinguish.

Not so much a bit of sparkle, but with the original colour they look as though they haven't been re furbished.
I have a set of Spider wheels and think they look much better.

Thanks for all your very helpful replies,

Thanks for the tip about requesting the brightest silver Chris. I'll mention that when I drop them off.

The present colour does seem a bit drab and don't mind losing a bit of originality on this occasion.

Regards

Mike.

The silvery colour of the Spider is not chrome paint. It's not as silvery as the chrome rim.

I have Spider alloys and had the paint matched when I had them refurbished. It turned out to match an existing PPG paint code that is now listed on the paperwork I received. I will dig that up and post it here.

They matched it to an interior part of the wheel so it hadn't oxidized and would be as close to original as possible. But as people have been saying, it is only for the Spider wheels, not TR8.

Sorry, just checked the paperwork and it does not list the paint code number. If I find it on anything else, I'll post it.
