Cigarette lighter

So my standard cigarette lighter in the car will light a cigarette but won't run the charger for the satnav. (I don't smoke). So I bought a modern cigarette lighter and fitted that and hey, the satnav won't work on that either, help?

Are you definitely getting power with your new charger? IIRC there were two different type of bases for cigarette lighters (the part that inserts into the dash receptacle was a slightly different shape.) Sometimes they come with an adapter in the shape of a metal ring that clips around the base to enable it to fit both types. Fitting older cigarette lighter powered charger / devices was often a problem with later European cars Also can't recall if the live to the cigarette lighter was permanently live or controlled by the ignition. supercass

My Magellan GPS charger works fine in my Cig. lighter, as well as phone charger. As an aside I wanted the GPS mount that clips into dash vents, Magellan wanted $49 for it so I went to eBay and got two for about 3 or 4 bucks each out of California.

Probably done it, but have you tried waggling it about a bit? My Garmin works fine but is a bit loose in the original socket. I found that changing into 1st and 3rd tended to knock the plug and disconnect it, sending the satnav into a power down mode. I got a cheap 3 way plus USB adaptor from ebay which has a much shorter plug and thinner with to the outlet box. It is much easier as the shorter plug does not get knocked and the box sits on top of the dash, avoiding the thick satnav cable running down the dash as it just lays on top with it.

Brings up the other point. The tightening of the socket leaves something to be desired. When I plug it in I give it a twist to tighten it as I plug it in. I tied the excess cord to the power plug to keep things tidy. It is a little tight shifting into third but one just drives around the shortcomings. Just like a Ferrari.[8D]

Hi,

More often than not there is a fuse in the adaptor for Sat Nav's phone chargers etc. If you can un-screw the adaptor then have a look they are normally small glass type, a few amps in rating ( less than the car fuse ) and sit behind the metal live feed, worth a look.
