Fitting Carpet on inner sill

Fitting Carpet on inner sill

Has anyone used double sided sticky tape to stick the carpet to the inner sill and transmission tunnel?
If when using spray adhesive is it necessary to cover all the back of the carpet with adhesive or is it enough to stick just the outside edges of the carpet to the inner sill and transmission tunnel?

I used double sided tape on top of the sill only for 't Kreng in the mid 90's and it's still on.
For the DHC used a local glue manufacturer, again only on the top of the sill.
Didn't use glue or tape on the transmission tunnel, except for the top/front of the carpet on both sides of the tunnel.

When I fitted mine, I set everything in place for a couple of days to allow the material to "settle" into the right shape. When using the adhesive, I put some on both pieces (sill and carpet). When they were tacky or almost dry, I then placed them into position and pressed them in firmly. I think I used a spreadable adhesive. I find that the spray is just too vague and end up with glue mist all over unwanted areas. I also targeted areas rather than gluing the entire piece. I also lined the sills with sound deadening foil, as the rest of the interior. The floors, and rear bulkhead have an additional 1/2" closed cell foam matt of sound deadening.

3M Spray 77 and similar does that .
Spray 90 is a lot more directional

What kind of tape do you use to cover those big holes before sticking the carpet on the sills?

I'll try to post some pics tonight after work. I used some duct tape to cover the holes as I was covering it up with the foil/rubber matt.

Why should you cover those holes, they do help ventilating the sills.
Covering them will trap condensation.
For that reason I went to great length not to cover them ...

I'm not really sure why. I guess the factory had them covered and they didn't rust out after a few decades so I just followed suit. I do like your logic though, perhaps I'll leave the next ones open.

The holes are covered by the carpet anyway so not sure how the condensation will escape by leaving them open underneath. Surely its better to Waxoyl inside the sills and make sure the drain holes are clear to allow the water to escape. They were blanked off originally to stop water(some hoods and door seals leaked) from going into the sill.
Personal opinion only, could be wrong but I have never had to change a rotten sill.

The Spider had the original tape on the holes so I put duct tape over them before reinstalling the carpet. I think Chris is right in that the tape was to protect the carpet from getting wet by soaking up any water getting in the sills and the bottom drain holes are for letting the water drain as well they (bottom holes)will create some air movement when under way to help dry the sills out. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it.

I've never seen them before. Looks like PO took the tape off and added the rubber stoppers. A little OCD IMHO.[:I]
