Main Beam Warning Light

Postby teeegeee » 12 Apr 2014 15:41

Hi everyone,

Just found this site and it looks really useful.

I have an 81 TR7 due for its MOT, and have just been checking things and have discovered the main beam warning light doesn't work, and that it's now an MOT issue!

Checked the bulb and that is OK, so where might the problem be?

Thanks for any advice.

I would check (clean) all connections at the instrument panel (wiring side and instrument panel side). I cleaned the plastic printed circuit lands with Brasso. While you have the instrument panel out, check every bulb (ohm meter across the terminals, not just by sight) and clean their contacts and sockets. You could also ID the wire that supplies the 12V and see if you have it at the instrument panel as well which would tell you if the problem is further back like the wiring etc.

Saturday night it was chilly & the back window was fogged. First time I had taken my TR7 out at night ( an 80s themed party, so had to go in a suitable car). So I switch on the rear demister & the main beam warning light comes on. Can't wait to track that one down!!!

An 80's theme party????? Wasn't the '80's just a year or two ago[:p]

Now a 60's theme party...that's more like it.[8D]

Sorry to be so slow in replying.

Thanks Spyder for the info.
I took out the instrument panel and did the cleaning of the contacts, but that didn't solve the problem - although I now do know that ALL the connections are clean!
The fault turned out to be the bulb holder itself. It was one with two metal connectors sticking out the back, and not the twist-in style of the other bulb holders.

Thanks.

I solved my problem as well.
Someone previously had the binnacle apart. There are 2 removable plastic pieces, one holds the high beam blue lens and the other the heated rear window indicator lens. Previous numbskull swapped them over. I swapped them over when I had the binnacle apart to fit led lighting and fix the sticking tacho needle.
Simples!
