Springs from the USA

A question for USA wedge drivers. I'm thinking of getting some springs shipped from the USA, even though the cost is an insane £70. Anyway, have any of you bought a set of springs from these guys. I don't want anything too hard or low and I might still go for standard ones from the UK suppliers. I am just curious as to how these compare with standard and UK uprated ones, some of which aren't very well made .

I have woody's on mine and am quite satisfied.

Yes there are lower than the stock type one, bu, probably equal to what my car was at with the original sagged units. They are hard , but far from rough.... I've done a few 4 hour round trips with no ride and drive complaints. My KYBs are doing a fine job dampening the ride , and have now lasted longer than the new "county" shocks I had installed previously with stock style height replacement springs than imho looked gastly too high.

I think Ted is great. I just got my head back from him today (haven't opened it yet), but I had trouble with his springs 3-4 years ago. They were significantly too tall. My car was pointing to the sky. He sent me 2 different sets and in the end I ordered a set from S&S and they were correct.

S&S on left, TSI on right. These are both front springs.

I put standard springs on mine (and KYB's). Car is very stiff, I hate to think how it would have been if I had put stiff ones on. It did raise it up enough to now clear speed bumps (except for one at London Drugs) but not enough to notice. The rears are original with Koni shocks. I don't have much dive or body roll. Mind you I do have hard black poly up front (soft yellow and blue poly rear)and the tire pressures are around 32 psi both which has a lot to do with it. I like the way it goes into a four wheel drift when pushed to the limit.

I don't think it sits up too high. About right for 13" wheels.

I found that the Roadster Factory in Pennslyvania were the only supplier that listed the correct springs for a car with AC. I have purchased a pair for the 1981 DHC and am quite pleased.

I bought four "standard" springs for my old TR8 and the ride height was much higher than standard. I tried 2 sets of uprated springs which were both useless.
I eventually purchased a set from Revington TR, dual rate 1" lowered, these were fantastic, transformed the car. Handled very well and still a comfortable ride.

Thanks for the info guys. Wouldn't be good if it was an easy task buying quality springs and bushes etc. I might try Revington, but the last time I looked they didn't have much info on their website and their parts are quite expensive. It might even cost less for shipping from the USA than to where I live in the UK, no joke. Forgot about S&S, I think they might sell better ones than the hellish red things. Still like the comfort and price of standard ones so I might still go for that.[:p]

Just for comparison of ride height, the first photo is my TR7 on original factory standard springs, the second is my TR8 on new standard springs and the third is my TR8 on Revingtons springs.

Thanks for that Andy. Looking at the three pictures I wouldn't have a problem with any of them, although the Revington option could be a problem over the ten speed humps I drive over every morning to get to work. On our roads I think the new springs would settle in no time and with 15 inch wheels would look just fine. I know it's a trade off but as I get older I think that comfort is more important, so I've sold the uprated red springs and some of the Superpro bushes. My mind is almost made up now, KYB shocks, 195/50/15s, Standard springs and Standard rubber bushes. For Info, Leacy Classics sell Standard springs with free delivery UK wide.
Is that Triton Green (code HAG) on the FHC? I'm thinking of changing the colour of mine from white to Triton.

I have the stock original springs on the 7, & couldn't be happier.

I had them retempered by a good local spring company about 8 years ago, & they are still going fine, & giving standard ride height. This is a usual practice here, where corrosion is not a problem, & retempering returns the spring to the original poundage.

I had the same company make new springs for the 8, requesting 30% stiffer all round, including anti roll bars. [The same heavier anti roll bars were fitted to the 7].

The 8 does have better handling, & more grip on smoother roads, but on our country roads, it would be a toss up which was better. The 8 has a bit more grip, & cornering power, but on the bumpier stuff the 7 handles better & is easier to drive.

The 7 is a better car for long trips, being less tiring & more relaxed. The 7 in particular is a joy on gravel, it is so forgiving. I can see why Troy has so much fun rallying his 7V8.

Having said all this, the 8 is no worse than the S2000 Honda. It's juddery ride does become tiring after a couple of hundred kilometers. I would say the S2000 is a 300Km car, the 8 a 500Km car, but the 7 is a 1000Km car, & still fun the next day. What you use the car for, mostly, should guide your choice.

Thanks Hasbeen, I can't see the UK roads improve much in the future, no cash they tell us, so standard springs might be a good choice. I like my red wedge with its hard bushes, spax and uprated springs, but I do remember my other wedges in the past were fun too with just small changes like 15" alloys.
