Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

Coil / distributor wire question

Postby paulheritage » 08 Mar 2014 18:56

The tachometer has never worked on my red '76 FHC and was going to swap to electronic ignition this weekend (like I did on the green '76 FHC) and thought I'd look at it at the same time. The connections look a but different, even though should be the same.
The current setup:
Coil has a blue condenser/capacitor mounted next to it connected to the + side of the coil that includes a piggy back male connector (the green car doesn't)
There's a dual white/slate connector to the + side of the coil.
There's a white/yellow connector to the + side of the coil.
There's a purple wire from the distributor to the - side of the coil.

There's a white/slate (female) wire not connected next to the coil and when connected to the - side (thought was the tachometer) means the car won't start.

All wires look original, coil is 12v.

Any thoughts if similar to others or potential tachometer fix?

Ta.

Probably a short in the tacho which kills the ignition when connected, which is why someones disconnected it.
A new tacho will probably sort it out.

I've got a couple of spare so will start with swapping and checking the wiring for continuity and make sure there's no short.

Just not sure what the blue part to + is for, but likely to be radio interference suppressor I presume?

Paul, the white and slate wire should be on the coil negative. This wire is the low tension wire from the dizzy and also feeds the tacho. It has 2 outlets one with 2 wires and one with one wire but it is actually the same wire. That's why your tacho wont be working...Steve

Disconnected the dual white/slate from the + side of coil and connected the single white/slate to the - side and everything working. The dual is left disconnected.
Previous owner must have had a problem and moved wires around.
Now time to take the distributor out and fit the stealth ignition kit. Will fit the same way as I did the green car and use both the white/slate wires.
Thanks for help Steve, no wonder there was a problem if both cables connected to + and - !

Finished putting the electronic ignition in (distributor out job) and done the wiring so can be reversed if someone in the future wants to go back to standard points. I reconnected the dual white/slate wire to the black wire from new ignition pickup and all works inc. the tacho.
