Vicious viscous !

Postby paul w » 10 Dec 2007 19:31

Driving my wedge today when i heard a nasty rumbling from under
the bonnet.Bl00dy hell!The engines blown up i thought.Then i
calmed down, popped the hood.Sure 'nuff, the noise is coming from the fans coupling. It spins easy, but you can rock fan on its shaft.
So do i replace the coupling or the tolerance ring,or both?
Its not the pulley/bearings,surely? I guess its a good excuse to
fit a Kenlow or similar?

Fit the elctric fan! you'll need a shorter fanbel - er, alternator drive belt[:o)], but S+S, Robsport or whoever (mine was down to S+S, can recommend them) will supply a suitable belt.

Paul, I have a spare viscous coupler if you would prefer to keep it closer to original, up to you. I'm only just the other side of Dartford Tunnel and can probably drop it round sometime.

Regards

Gary

Sounds like the viscous coupling has gone ...
If you want to stick to it the also check the pulley itself (just to be sure).
If it was the tolerance ring the fan would probably have left the car with a big bang [:I]

I know what you mean Paul, I made several rather large donations to Simon and Rob during the rebuild of Eeyore!!

Cheers

Anytime you remove the coupling, always replace the tolerance ring with a new one in my opinion. It's just that anything that is only friction fit like that I always want to have the same tolerance all the time and you won't get that if you re use it. The little nubs will deform the first time you put it on as they are supposed to and won't have the same (tolerance) as when you first put them on. Put a new one on...their cheap...and its cheaper than pulling the fan out of you radiator or hood.

I had pretty much the same situation not so long ago, but I got a loud squealing sound when I revved the car or left her to run a little and then she would squeal like mad. It sounded like it was coming from the engine itself, which worried me greatly, as I had just changed the oil and was wondering if I had put the right stuff in lol.
I brought a new ring and after taking the fan off, I found out it was the coupling. So I brought a new one and this sorted out the issue all good, no more squealing like the engine was going to stop dead. If I was you for the cost, I would change the whole thing. But if you are thinking of going for an electric, that is the way I would go.
I also have a spare ring and coupling if you are near to Birmingham anytime, just let me know.

Or alternatively, send the cash to me and I'll spend it for you, thus saving you the heartache! (Drool - 4.6 V8 - drool. Going for a quiet lay down now, I'll be better soon.)

Got a new coupling and tolerance ring from 'Bobsport'.
Will fit it tommorrow coz i had to put an alternator
on 'her indoor's' Citroen Berlingo today. What a bloody
nightmare that was!Citroen book time 40 mins.Took me
4 hours!Had to move rad and power steering pump to
access the offending article.I think i'll stick to
my 'old bangers'in future!

See ya. Paul

Paul,

Here is how you do it:

• Remove the fan shroud.
• Remove the four bolts that hold the fan to the coupler. Hard to get a hold of bolts with wrenches. You can remove the assembly with out taking off the fan, but you must be careful of radiator.
• Loosen the alternator holding bolts, slacken the belt and remove.
• Loosen the 4 bolts holding the fan assembly to the block, remembering which bolt goes where. One bolt hidden behind the pulley.
• As you loosen this bolt last, pull the assembly away from the block.
• Remove assembly straight up from block.
• Put the assembly in a vice held by the block face. (Remove the fan if it was not removed earlier.)
• Using a three hook puller, put the hooks behind the viscous coupler and alight the center drive screw of the puller with the center of the coupler shaft.
• Use impact drive to turn the center screw to remove the coupler.
• Remove the sleeve from the end of the shaft.
• Clean shaft well.
• Remove the pulley assembly from the vice and reinstall it on the vice with the shaft pointing straight up.
• CAREFULLY place a new sleeve onto the shaft WITHOUT deforming it!
• Place the new viscous coupler on the shaft in the proper direction. DO NOT PUSH IT DOWN!
• Hold the sleeve in place on the shaft and carefully use a rubber mallet to start the coupler down on the shaft. Be careful that the sleeve stays in the groove!
• Once the coupler is started well and the sleeve is still in its groove, use a socket and hammer to drive the coupler home.
• Carefully align the pulley assembly with the block and start the hidden hole. (If the bolt falls out use a magnetic wand to hold it with the shaft vertical and the head down, slip it into position and have some one with very small fingers, push it up and into the hole, then have them start the bolt.)
• Replace the other three bolts and tighten all four.
• Reinstall the fan belt and tighten the alternator in position
• Reinstall the fan.
• Reinstall the fan shroud.

Have fun, Paul!

Have fun, drive fast & safe, be kewl,

jclay
