Ballast Resistor Wire???

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

Ballast Resistor Wire???

Postby JSutton1 » 03 Dec 2007 12:27

I understand it is pink. Where can I find it. I think mine is burned out?

Hi Jim,

The ballast resister is actually in the wiring loom itself. So not easy to find!

It's actually pink/white
On European and UK cars (from 1980 on) it sits between a white wire coming from the ignition switch and a white/yellow wire coming from the starter relay/going to the coil (+ terminal).

Not to be confused with the white/pink wire running from the ignition switch ...

If you find it, it should have a resistance between 1.3 and 1.5 Ohm

Hi Jim,
The ballast ign wire on UK cars jions the ignition wire on the passenger side just above the loom connectors for the engine/gearbox harness. Its a black bullet type connector and can clearly read 'resistor' (Its pink and white)on the cable itself. It then disappears into the main loom.If this wire is faulty then can get a resitor that mounts along side the coil so poss to 'bypass' the ballast wire by cutting it out both ends and run your own wire though to the above mentioned resistor.
I have the dash out of my DHC at the moment so will try and picture the connector for you and post later.
Cheers John

Hi Jim,
Photo's as promised,

The above shows general location of join into main harness.

This shows a close up of connector (and my grubby finger [:D] )
Hope this helps,
Cheers John.

Where the hell is the other end of this pink wire thing [:(!]

Wayne/Jim,

The other end of this white/pink striped wire then goes across the bulkhead and pop's through into the corner of the engine bay. It connnects to a larger white wire, via a joint with black heat shrink covering.

If you want to remove the pink wire from the circuit. This larger white is good point to connect too, with this wire going back to the non fused side of the electric's.

I hope this helps.

OK, this must be somewhere in the loom that comes off the top of the gearbox for me. I seem to remember the standard TR7 wires for the coil come up through that hole on the bulkhead where the throttle and choke cables go through - slightly different on the Grinnall as there are no wires through there except for the cooling fan switch.

Does this pink wire go straight to the coil (via the larger white wire you describe) i.e could I track back the coil + wire as far as I can and then take it off at a convenient position and wire it straight to the yellow/white wire that joins to the pink wire at the joint John shows above?

Hope thats understandable - you might guess electrics are my weakness!

Wayne,

Yes it does come out in the area the choke / throttle comes out. This resistor wire pop out for as hort length and then connects to the Larger white wire and then goes back into through the bulkhead harness rubber grommet. All I can assume it's too loose the length of this resitor wire which if you bare it back is steel strands not copper ones.

The white / yellow striped wire is a different one in the harness which goes to the coil.

Blimey now i'm really confused [:D]

Feel like such a dunce with electrics I really do [:(] All I want is 12 volts at the + feed to the coil not 3.5 as i'm getting now. How do I wire this up - can't seem to find any of these bits of wire described apart from the junction illustrated in Johns pics above.

So the latest is, I cut the connection and took a wire from the yellow/white junction shown in Johns pic above and jumped it across to the thick white wire coming off the back of the ignition - still getting 3.5 volts at the coil - now what , just dont seem to be able to bypass this little B*****D!!! [V][:(!]

From what I can make of the wiring diagram in thw Haynes this shud have done it but clearly not.

The yellow/white wire only feeds 12 volts directly to the coil - WHEN - the starter is in operation!

OK so currently when I disconnect the yellow/white from the pink and leave the dangling - the engine turns over and the voltage at the coil goes from 3.5 volts to 1.5 volts until I stop cranking then it returns to 3.5v The battery voltage is just under 12.

The Haynes diagram seems to show that the resistance wire is only connected to the white wire on the switch and the yellow/white off the relay? So if I cut and jump this to the switch as a bypass how is it still being supressed?

How the hell do you bypass this bloody resistance wire and who on earth invented this ridiculous idea in the first place lol[:0]
