Starter solenoid

Postby Tjmitch » 13 Mar 2026 21:58

The solenoid on standard TR7 starter motor has started to work only intermittently. It’s now rarely engaging when I turn the ignition key, so need to do something about it!

I can hear the solenoid plunger click so assume the wiring and cabling is all ok.

My question is, is it possible to remove the solenoid from the starter motor in situ without have to go to all the bother of removing exhaust down pipe to get to the starter motor to remove it worth he solenoid?

I’m guessing I can try cleaning the plunger contacts or bit and fitting a new solenoid…

When I was having starter problems, I got a Nippon Denso gear reduction starter with adapter ring that someone was selling on eBay ($86). Wasn't the problem, the 12V clamp was clamped to the wire to starter problem. Fixed that, left new starter in. Didn't want to fiddle with it as it was the start of driving season. That was ten years ago now.
