TR7 Rear brake cylinder clip help needed

Postby Traindriver69 » 25 Jul 2018 19:11

Hi all
Been trying to replace a rear brake cylinder on my TR7 and struggling to get the new clip on to secure it.
Has anyone got any advice to get this clip on.
Many thanks in advance

I managed (with a struggle and appropriate words) with a pair of grips/pump pliers. However, there is a circlip tool you can get which makes it easier. This is the MGB one, not sure if it fits the TR7:

Video of how it works.

I installed the clip very easily with a pair of adjustable pliers that has the jaws at roughly a 90 degree angle and long handles that are about 14" long. I thought I had installed it backwards it was so easy (because everybody was complaining about how hard it was) but according to the video above I did it correctly. I picked it up for $6 at a discount store. It also was instrumental at holding the gas tank retaining straps while undoing the nuts on the bolts, the long handles allowing the jaws to get up to the front of the gas tank. I had posted a picture before in the olden days when you could still use Photobucket but haven't gone to a new hosting site yet. They are called channel lock pliers and you can Google image them.

How many still here remember Ally, the young lady TR7 owner we lost suddenly.

She devoted a thread to her difficulties in installing this clip on her 7, & exhibited total joy when she finally succeeded.

Strange you mentioned Ally, I was looking at a picture of my car with "lights on for Ally day" just yesterday, I believe jclay started that one, another sorely missed member. All gone too soon.

Ally's "Drive your TR7 Day" is on September 11th.

Hope we will all be out with the lights on.

I bought a tool to do those brake circlips, make sure to get one with right thread.
You will see the Mini ones for sale but they are 3/8" x 24 tpi and you need the 10mm x 1mm fine metric one.

Looks like this when its on the cylinder. The dark coloured sleeve pushes the circip down over the taper and down to the groove in the cylinder.
