Which thermostat??

Hi all
I have a 1981 dhc 2.0l I ordered a new cooling system thermostat for it but when I came to replacing it the old one was shorter than the new one.
The new one still fit and runs but what is the difference I have since looked on websites and they do sell a short and a longer one but they say both fits the 2.0l engines.

The right stat has a 'foot' on the bottom to direct the water correctly. It is generally a little longer than others.
