New wiring harness woes

Postby sjkearney » 10 Sep 2016 13:34

Hi all! been a long time, but I'm still trying to get Ginny into shape.

Got a new main wiring harness for Ginny ('79 DHC with no AC and the 12 fuse box) this week and set about installing it today. I'll preface this by saying I'm OK wrenching but have no real experience with wiring.

Anyway, there are a few oddities with the new harness and I'm not sure how to proceed.

On the Green, white\black, and purple wires, the new harness has these wires clamped to one terminal. The original harness has a terminal for each wire. I've attached a link to pics to illustrate.

The old harness had 3 green wires attached, the new harness only has two.

Also, there are 2 white wires (in the link) that have no
defining marks so I don't know which wire goes where.

Can anyone shed some light? Thanks!!

There are many types of wiring depending on year, destination (UK/US), A/C, non A/C, FI, Carb. Your wiring harness may not have come from the same type of car as yours. The different wiring diagrams are in the OEM manual. Learning how to read a wiring diagram is helpful to say the least. On the bright side, the wiring diagram is on one page not on 36 pages (or what ever it was) like on the IBM copier I (or II) that I learned on. You are lucky.

Thanks.

I do have the manual in a searchable PDF. I have been looking at the diagram, I still haven't made much sense of it. I'm mostly looking for where the fuse box is on the diagram, can't seem to locate it.

Ginny is a '79, no A\C, US market, carbureted.

Oh BTW this is a brand new harness from Autosparks in the UK, not a used harness.

If your wiring diagram is like the one in the manual I have a pdf copy of the fuse box is not shown as an item. The fuses in the circuits are shown in the wiring lines, symbol is oxo (or two small circles with an 'x' between them) if that makes sense.

Allan,

Thanks so much! This is great info. I'll have a look at the diagram again and see if I can comprehend anything now. LOL.

Appreciate it! BTW, just picked up a really inexpensive '99 9-3 automatic convertible for the youngest to learn how to drive on. Saabs are awesome.

Yes, difficult to describe in words.

I have had Saabs for the last 17 years, 3 x 9000 and currently a 9-5. Looking for a reasonable 9-3 vert auto for the wife at the moment, my son still has my first 9k, along with a Stage 3 9k and a 9-5 diesel (try not to mention that one). Saabs can become addictive, much like TR7's!

Hi all!

An update. Got a map from the vendor, which helps a lot, but I'm still not sure where the 2 white wires attach on the fuse box.

here's a link to the album with the map
