Sorry swordfish, but I can't understand, from your description, just what your 'blip' is. Perhaps if you could be more descriptive of your problem, some may be more able to offer suggestions.

Juddering as in misfiring?
Does the engine accelerate beyond 3000 rpm?
Difference between engine under load or not?

This juddering or uneven running is mostly at around 3000 RPM while car is in neutral, yes? There is no load on the engine, no work being done at this time. Am I correct?
Is the normal slow idle nice and smooth? Or a bit shaky?
I think I would richen the mixture at idle just a wee bit. Are the carbs SU or Stromberg? I know that richening this type of carburetor for smooth idle will also add richness throughout it's operation but the very miniscule amount of added richness I'm speaking of will not effect anything else.
