Door mirrors

Postby Brianc » 13 Jul 2016 21:08

Has anyone fitted anything other than standard door mirrors. Mine are quite small and a bit loose on their mountings

The standard ones should be pretty good for vision but you do need the convex glass in them. If they are loose it would be worth checking how they are fitted to the door. Someone had put mine on with self tappers after the car was painted instead of using the proper mounting plates on the inside.
The replacement mirrors you buy now have a plastic mounting instead of the original alloy ones and they break very easily, probably some kind of modern safety idea. Woody at the wedge shop also has some little metal inserts to use instead of the nasty modern plastic parts that break very easily. Got some of his on mine now and the mirrors are rock solid.

This is a mounting plate that just fits inside the door for the standard mirror.

This is the base of a modern replacement showing how they break and are fitted with self tappers.

These are the metal parts from Woody that replace the broken plastic part in picture 3.

If you aren't concerned with originality just go to your auto wreckers and look for a pair that you think will look good.

They were mirrors gleaned from different cars from the auto wreckers.

Brian, I have standard mirrors with the convex lenses that are not loose and give pretty good vision. I have been back and edited my post to add some explanations so hope that helps.

Not original but thought the wedge shape suited the car and they give good visibility

Mine are also a little loose and i am looking at buying some of the metal mounts that go inside the door. I have seen posts on here before from people on here who have replqced the standard door mirrors with newer ones and even electric ones. The main issue with that though was the mirrors needed to come from a car that had them mounted on the door and not the door side window. There are ones out there and from memory the posts had pictures which looked good. If you search you should be able to find them. Also if you replace them it sure would be nice to see the results.
