I have an LT77 gearbox that could really do with a rebuild, noise in gear and sounds terrible in reverse.

How difficult is it to rebuild?

Any special tools required?

Any help appreciated.

Not to difficult to do, here's some reading;

And make sure you have copy of the original workshop manual.

I managed to rebuild my TR7 5 speed gearbox, but failed at the last hurdle. For some odd reason I couldn't 'close' the box - I didn't want to force it. I thus had to spend £50 for a gearbox specialist to complete the job. Still, much cheaper than getting them to recondition it.

Basically, read the workshop manual for all the details.

Probably caused by the oil pump shaft not being aligned with the recess in the pumpgear (they are not self-aligning).
