Fittings

Now i know this is probably a stupid question - but what type are the fittings on our tr7/8 s. Are the metric, af or ????

I really should know but its been some time since i worked on my 80s car !!!!!

AFAIWA, it's metric but I remember reading on the forum that a couple of obscure items weren't.

Everything fitted to the engine plus the back axle links are UNF/UNC, everthing else is metric.
(that's for a 5-speed car, don't know the 4-speed, probably 'box plus back axle UNF/UNC too)

I should have mentioned mine is a v8 with a 3 speed gm auto lol

Hi,

As my learned friend Bean's said, but with the Rover V8 any bolt on it screwed into alloy will be UNC, nice and coarse.

With brakes on the cars in Oz at least, about half are Lockheed & the other Girling. One lot are metric the other imperial.

It's a pity I can't remember which is which is which? Just be careful, & don't assume bits such as hoses & pipe fittings are interchangeable.

In my ignorance i probably asked the wrong question, but at least i have some information re threads now.

I was really asking will i be using my metric spanners or do i need to find my old AF ones !!!!!

AF? Never heard that one before, only Metric, SAE and Whitworth. must be local lingo?

Hi,

AF is used over here in the old country for what are often called imperial spanners, stands for Across the Flats, what you gents call SAE, which incidentally is seldom used over here.

A lot of AF and metric are very close as far as spanner sizes go BUT always use the correct tool for the job to avoid tears
