I am in the process of rewiring a good chunk of my car and have the loom on the bench. I have a handful of Lucas and Bosch relays of various types. Should I be looking at replacing them as a matter of course? Is there anything particularly special about any of them? Aside from a Bosch double relay, I think most of them can be easily replaced with newer items, which seems a wise course. Am I missing something?

To be honest i`ve always found the lucas relays to be ok.
The only thing that damages them is damp,which affects most relays.
Find good harness connections for them and especially the headlight connectors(the bullet connectors are dire) and change to the blade type fuses.

I have changed the fuse block over to blade fuses and I'm using advice from Cobber's post about wiring in relays for the headlights. With the loom out of the car, I am in the process of wiring in the extra relays behind the dash. I didn't want to put them in the engine bay as I am still working on the layout with the V6 I am putting in and want to keep things as clean as possible. The Lucas and Bosch relays are untested as they came out of a couple of non-runners. Both cars had sat out in a field for a number of years under a tarp, so moisture could be an issue.

When I had problem with Starter Lucas relay, (it wasn't the relay but dirty connector block) I took it apart to see if there was anything internal possibly causing the problem. It was like brand new inside. I epoxied the cap back on and it's still working three years later and counting. They are more expensive than say the Bosch.
