Strange Screw Head

Please can anyone tell me what kind of screw this is? It is part of the dash assembly. I must have a hundred screw bits. Never seen one like this!

I know that it looks a strange one, but I was able to loosen and tighten mine with a normal small flat head screwdriver. It took a bit, but I was able to do it.

Unfortunately the pic isn't at a high enough resolution to get a good look, it looks a bit like a place bolt, which is a special type of bolt which is used on rotating assemblies such as flywheels and diff crown wheels ( I'll not try and explain how these work, it'd take pages) but there is no reason why you'd use one of those on something like a dash.

Could you take a better pic? preferably with something else in the pic to give an idea of size such as a pencil.

There are used in the instrument cluster and I used a screwdriver with an indent filed in the centre to remove them.Steve

I have always been able to undo them with a flat blade screwdriver. You can always replace them with a "normal" pozi or phillips type screw afterwards if you need to.

I have always found these jobs to be the worst. You go to the garage thinking it will be a simple job and end up being there for hours

It is good that you got them out though and I would certainly think about replacing them.

Most definitely . I'm replacing the clock with a battery one so easy access is required at least twice a year.

Top of the instrument cluster. Again, I have found them simple enough to undo and re-tighten with a normal largish flat blade screwdriver.

a 12 point socket usually works as well.

Is it just me who has the correct screwdrivers to undo all these little dash screws? I bought a pack full of screwdrivers with these strange heads for very little money.

I got them undone and replaced them all with ordinary screws. See my post on Battery Clock.
