Hi all,

I've the late model (UK) steering wheel with the three silver inserts. These have become worn/scratched and I'd like to spruce them up a bit.

Does anybody know how they come off or they glued on?

If I remember correctly the are held with lugs and just prise off. I took them off and sprayed with Hammerite silver. Note I also thought I would finish with a few coats of lacquer - big mistake, it went off. Rubbed it back and just sprayed with Hammerite again and it is fine.

Had a go at the steering wheel and yes there are two lugs on each spoke. Some gentle persuasion with my trim removal tool and they popped off.

After watching an old episode of Wheeler dealers, I thought rather than re-spray the spokes I'd try vinyl warp. Ordered some plain silver off ebay so I'll give that a go first.

Wheel with two holes for the lugs. It's a bit grubby but the flash makes it look even worse and a bit faded.

I used silver paint for plastic model kits.
Gave a very nice finish.

I had mine resprayed in 2 stage base/clear in the paint booth at work while they were doing some customer pay trim items.

The trims pop on/off quite easily.

While that is optimum, not a option for most. I would use silver caliper paint. While heat resistant I think it would be more wear resistant than regular paint although I don't know the properties of model paint as it's been over half a century since I've last used it.[:p]
