Steering wheel replacement

Hello!

I am a young married man in the states that has adopted my first son. Or should I say, my first project car. I chose the TR7 for its smashing looks. My TR7 is in good running condition, so until I replace the motor, I would like to do some minor cosmetic changes. I love the stock look of the machine, but I cannot stand the steering wheel. It may be someone's cup of tea, but not mine. It reminds me of a toilet seat. I have seen this one roaming around various TR7 photos:

Does anyone know the name or where this steering wheel came from? I would like to add it to my TR7. Thank you much!

First, download the TR7man.pdf file from my download page. The steering wheel in the photo is a standard TR7 wheel. They also installed one with a big pad in the middle. The pad can be removed by taking off the steering wheel and removing the screws from the back that holds the pad in place. If you want a TR8/Spider wheel, the Wedge Shop makes one that is fairly close to the original.

Thank you! That is a great resource. My steering wheel is the one with the big pad, but I was looking specifically for the one in the photo link. Was there a certain year that one was the standard one so I can search for it? Thank you!

I like the TR8 / Spider wheel the best out of the factory supplied wheels. You can always get a accessory steering wheel hub from a manufacture like Momo, Moto-lita etc. and the fit one of there wheels -

The wheel in your link is from the later (Solihull build) UK cars. Probably didn't happen in the states as they were more worried about the driver being speared by the column. Note, the silver bits are plastic clip on parts. My '81 was fitted with one but now replaced by a slightly smaller Mountney alloy one courtesy of my son.

So, for the last 37 3/4 years I have been gripping the rim of a TOILET SEAT? What's next? Does the Leyland 'L' look to you like it's being flushed? Well, actually it kinda does, but that's no excuse for putting vile images into my delicate mind.

I think there are four different wheels. The one I think you have looks like it has a fake air bag in it (I think it was early model), there was another one, then the one you have s picture of which is the last version offered and finally the TR8 13" wheel (which had power steering) but also showed up on the Spider special edition (picture below) and the 30th Anniversary Edition. It was a good looking wheel but maybe a little more traditional than the latest more modern looking one.

That is great to know! Thank you all so much. The car is being shipped to me so it should be here by next weekend. I will post pictures and I also plan on doing an audit on what needs to be done mechanically and then cosmetically. I will probably place it all in an order of priority. I am hoping to get some more help here, thank you again. Also, is anyone a member of triumphwedgeowners.org? Their last news update for events was 2013. Is it worth the $20 membership?

Naw, it's not worth $20. Let me tell you what those slackers do with your money. They have expert people with TR7&8 fuel injection systems. In fact they have designed a test box for trouble shooting your fuel injection systen, then even send it out to members to use for free, but you pay shipping to get it. They also will trouble shoot your ECU for fuel injected 7&8's and fix it if it needs repair FREE. Then, they also designed and made a tool for removing TR7 and Stag heads when they are stuck on. They also send that out for members to used. They also waste your money by pressuring manufactors to make silly stuff like NLS parts, power steering hoses for the TR8, sun visors for 7&8's, fuel injection engine harness for the TR8 and probably some other stuff I can not think of right now. Here's the worst part, the club is very active in all Triumph events across the country. They even shipped Harris Mann over from the UK to hang out with them this fall. Also, any time I've ever needed some obscure part and let the club know I needed something, I get three of four of those club members pretty regularly contact me offering up a part. Their news letter has some pretty talented members writing up "how-to" articles. New reproduction parts testing etc.

All that for about the cost of four valve stems made in China. Honestly, when I renewed my membership tonight, I told them to raise the dues. It's the cheapest owner's group I belong to.
