You know what happens when you change the oil filter housed in a canister. Yes normally you get oil all down your arm etc etc I am trying to figure some things out on my ebay procured 1980 tr7 So I was shocked when I pulled the canister and found that even though I had been running the engine the filter canister was only half full. I have been playing with canister filter cars for over 50 years and this is a new one on me. I pulled the oil pump and checked to make sure I was pumping oil even though my hot LBS showed 35 at 3000 rpm The pump was like new.
SO THE QUESTION IS HAS ANYONE EVER EXPERIENCED THIS BEFORE AND WHAT WAS THE CAUSE, OUTCOME ETC ETC
THANKS IN ADVANCE

When I pull the canister the oil leaks down the bolt hole so don't know how much oil is there. Get a little oil on my hands but since I don't wear a dress I'm not too concerned. A twist on oil filter would be neater but it's $60 for an adapter or a few pennies for a few sheets of paper towel, what to do.... what to do. I guess I'll stay with the paper towels for now.[:p]

One of my two cars have a canister. Last time I changed the oil I loosened the bolt and it started to leak oil from the top of the canister. After the leaking stopped I removed the canister. I'm pretty sure the canister was full.

How long before removing the canister were you running the engine?
How good is the seal of the bolt to the bottom of the canister?
With the filter filling much of the space it would not take long, [a few hours] to lose half of the oil.
However If you moved the thing, or ran it to warm the oil before draining, it definitely should have been full. There must be a bypass to allow oil past a blocked filter, & this has locked open. It the engine was not rattling it's head off, I think this must be the problem.
Unfortunately although my manual has a listing for the pressure relief valve, & other such bits, Leyland did not bother to put them in the text. Thus I can not actually see a drawing of the parts, but that is where I would start looking.
