Exhaust system for FI TR7

I am a newby to t7s and recently purchased a 1980 cali car with fuel injection (PI) my problems are many including mental illness but that is another story. For now I will post just one question. Comments are welcome.
I noticed a bad rattle that occurs primarily when the car warms up. I was able to trace said rattle to inside of the catalytic converter. It sounds like a marble being tossed about in a coffee tin. My question is can I install a non cat exhaust system either directly to the exhaust manifold or by cutting and welding a head of the cat converter without it affecting my fuel injection system The ERG sensor is in the manifold so that is not a problem. Hopefully the answer is yes so I can get more air flow and thus mor power and sound out of this beast
Thank you
Bruce

That's not an EGR sensor in the manifold but an oxygen sensor that gives lambda feedback to the ECU to fine tune the air/fuel mixture. That odometer looking thing separating the speedometer cable keeps track of when it needs changing and will turn on the oxygen light on in the dash to let you know. As for the rattle, it's probably the catalytic honeycomb broken down. The Spitfire guys used to just knock the insides out and leave the converter in place so it looks like everything is there. This works fine if you just have a visual inspection for that age of car but if you have emissions testing (sensor in the tail pipe) it may not work out so well.
Don't know what your area does but fortunately here on the island they did away with all testing some time ago and just do it in the big city on the mainland (Vancouver). At the end of the year all emissions testing in Vancouver will be done away with.

No testing in Texas if the car is 25 years old, but if you lived in California, you will have to have it. You can use a test tube from TSI, but you will have to add a bung for the sensor to keep the FI working.

Hi,
[:D] WELCOME TO THE BEST TR7 / 8 FORUM IN THE WORLD EVER [8D]
I have 'removed' the honey comb before years ago on a Rover that came into work, it has collapsed and was blocking the exhaust, the gent was on his way to catch a ferry for a holiday. His car wouldn't go above 40 mph due to the back pressure. The only thing was it sounded a bit 'weird' afterwards. Lots of people over here are doing the same with DPF's now when they clog up and refuse to regenerate.
I would fit standard system back on with a bung welded in for the O2 sensor as suggested, will poss go better too without the cat, not that its poss doing a lot if broken up !
Cheers John

Hi Bruce, we all have a mental illness here, or we would own sensible Corollas, rather than some obscure pommy thing, with all it's hassles.
I can't help you with your problem, but I can say welcome, & hope you have fun.

I was able to replace the center silencer with an "off the shelf" straight through muffler from Jegs. I forget the in/out measurements, but it was dirt cheap, solid as a rock, and sounded pretty good.
Something like this -

I replaced mine because what was there was riddled with holes.

The O2 sensor is in the exhaust manifold rather than in the header pipe.
So unless one of you experts (anyone that knows more then I do which is just about everyone) can tell me why a standard 75-76 front pipe would not work on my petrol injected car that is what I will go with
Many thanks

While I haven't done it myself, I think it will fit as the different front pipes seem to be a function of the cat attached to them as one piece (or not in the case of the 75-76) rather than any difference in mounting flange. I think the only difference in FI and carb exhaust manifold was it had a bung for Ox sensor and didn't use the hot air flange (it used exhaust manifold to head gaskets while carbs didn't). So it seems from looking at part numbers in parts books.
