It's not unusual with the floppy drophead body. The knack is to pull the lever (the inside lever) and with your other hand give the door a bloody good whack in the middle. Others can advise you better but that's essentially it.
As far as I know, this doesn't happen with the coupe. I've certainly never had it in 30 years and I've had just about everything else in that time.

It is separate from the main latch. It is the upper catch on the rear of the door frame. Spray it well with penetrating oil until the sliding wedge part of the latch will move in and out freely. Then I blew out the oil and dirt with compressed air and worked some light lithium grease in under the wedge. I've had no problems with them since.

The latch is really a wedge in a housing mounted to the door frame. Question: When you open your door, do you hear a clicking sound about 5 seconds later? That wedge gets gunked up with dirt and sticks. When you open your door it should move immediately. Spray the whole thing with WD40, then use your finger to free the wedge until it slides freely. Clean everything up and oil the latch with some engine oil.
There are several components of the drop heads that have been left out of you usual catalog illustrations like this door anti burst latch and the window stop.
