Just fitted one of these to std. 7, how much louder than std.
are these, at idle and running. This one seems quite loud, cannot find and leaks/ cracks ?

My friend, it's not the noise from the header, or as you good folks call it, the Stainless Steel 4 Branch Manifold, you hear. It's the increase in noise from the new muffler/resonator.

My headers are hooked up to a relatively stock exhaust system and the exhaust noise is no more than the factory setup, perhaps a little less. As long as the flange is tight at the head and the connecting pipe, I suggest the noise is to be found elsewhere.

SJ, the new manifold has probably changed the whole of the gas flow through your system as it should be more efficient. I guess you have checked for leaks? I wonder if it could be that there is physically less material than a standard one to soften the noises? Perhaps the rest of the system will need upgrading as well.

The header, being made of welded tubing stock, has less mass that the cast iron OEM manifold and as such transmits more sound through the walls of the manifold. It should noticeably nosier but not extremely. Most FLAPs sell header wrap which will help keep the heat inside the system and lower exterior noise.

If you changed out the rest of the exhaust with a "high performance" system it will probably be a lot louder than stock. I recently installed a Monza system on a 76 coupe and it's a lot louder inside the car and out.

what I perhaps was thinking was, is SS clearly louder than a mild steel 4 branch manifold.

The middle box does now seems to have a slight blow but this quite modest by comparison !

Mine came with a tubular manifold and Rimmers (I think) SS system courtesy of the PO so have never lived with a standard one. The manifold perforated deep in both the 'Y' sections, played havoc with the running. I bought a second hand SS tubular manifold, on sale because the guy who had it (it was sold by a friend) thought it was too noisy. It was a different sound to the previous one but not too bad. I have been asked if it has a V8 at a couple of shows but sadly its only a standard 2 litre.

I find its not too bad at idle and the sound gets left behind on the road, no problem on a long motorway journey (like Billing or Gaydon). Through tunnels it sounds fine to me....

Thats interesting, mine appears to be intact as I said, think I will sort the middle box and await outcome, with possibility that I might experiment with some exhaust wrap.
