Gearbox extension loose and rattling!

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

Gearbox extension loose and rattling!

Postby Dougdavie » 15 Sep 2014 07:22

I have had a rattling noise when changing down gears for a little while and thought it would be the anti rattle spring and pin come adrift etc.

On investigation I found the whole rear extension (where the gear stick goes in) moving around.

It's quite inaccessible from inside the car despite me stripping out the trim around the gear stick and removing the access panel.

I need to het the car on a ramp to investigate further.

Has anyone had any experience with this and is it likely to be a case of just bolting it back up (using correct washers etc).

Any help much appreciated........

Hi Doug,

I assume a five speed box ? In that case the bushes for gear selector housing have fallen part, a reasonably common fault. Replace them with poly bush type and you will be fine. Available from all suppliers as these from Robsport -

Can be done from inside the car, with centre console removed, easy enough to do just a bit fiddly, ensure the lever assembly is located in the pin coming out the box when going back together, very frustrating in you change the bushes only to find this has slipped out [:(!]

My bet also. Mine had completely disintegrated and fallen off. I did mine from underneath putting the car up on jack stands. This gives you a chance to get under the car to get a good idea what is involved re: general condition and other jobs, tire rotation etc. etc. Not so easy if you don't have a garage, uneven ground, soft ground and/or sloping ground etc. in which case from above will be the ticket.

Did mine from underneath as well removed the gearbox x member and dropped the rear of the trans a couple of inches to make more room.

When you lift out the gearstick take care not to loose the spring and its cap that stops the stick rattling.

There is a good chance the cap will be loose because the bolt tab has cracked off anyway, virtually all the ones I have worked on seem to be.
