Clutch master cylinder

Postby Grant Hull » 11 Sep 2014 19:18

I have started to put my 7 back together just so I can drive her in and out of the garage when I work on her.

The clutch pedal had no pressure what so ever half way down and than only a little resistance the rest of the way [:(]

I thought it just needed bleeding as the fluid level was low. Bled the system, but very little came out the slave cylinder and now the pedal goes flat to the floor with NO resistance what so ever [}:)]

I took the master cylinder off as the rod connected to the pedal was very loose. Took the cylinder apart, low and behold the spring to push the rod back is snapped in 2 places [:0]

Which brings me to my questions.
1 Has anyone else suffered this type of failure?
2 Can these springs be bought anywhere?
3 Is it worth repairing the cylinder or buying a replacement one?

Bin it and get a new one, with broken bits of spring floating about in the master cyl the bore is probably scored.

You can get the cylinder sleeved with brass or SS so it won't corrode for cheaper than buying a new one. You get back a cylinder that looks like new. I assume you have something similar in UK but we send to US.

Ive done as Cobber suggested and bought a new one. The bore isn't scored but I'll try and get a new spring from somewhere and rebuild it for a spare [:D]

I changed out with an Isuzu master cylinder several years ago, and have had zero problems since.

Unfortunately a long way to send them for sleeving. I am not aware of anywhere in the UK doing this, seems to be States, Canada & Oz thing. Here we just chuck them and buy new if a rebuild kit will not do it. Would be good to know if there is anywhere in the UK offering this service.

Mine did the same unfortunately in the middle of a busy junction with no drive, the only time in 21 years of ownership I have had to be recovered by the AA.
I fitted a brake spring and some seals I had but it leaked and the pedal load was higher.
