Impeller removal

Postby alansti » 12 Aug 2014 10:27

Hi All, Could anyone offer any advice on disassembling the Waterpumps please, I'm worried that I'll break the impeller.

You are right to be be careful, they can break easily, I broke one myself. Main thing is to support it properly underneath and close to the spindle before pressing it off. Needs something like some thick wall tube that fits as close over the bearing as possible so it keeps the pressure near to the shaft. Don't just attack it with a hammer!

I think you will find lots more "proper" advice on here, and have a look using the Search tool.

Thanks for the warning Russ, there`s not much on actually stripping the pump on here, I guess that I need to find a press. I welded a slide hammer adapter to the stripped L H threaded bold that removed the pump at least for now. I'll fetal the spindle but the brass cage is still in the block so more slide hammer work is required.

There probably isn't much information about it because not too many people are successful at tearing them down without breaking the impeller. Some will also tell you that the impeller may not go back on as well as it should either. It's worth a try, but don't be too surprised if you end up buying a replacement pump.

Getting the brass cage out isn't too difficult once you have a slide hammer.

Good luck!

Seeing you've got this far, you could consider replacing it with a Davies Craig EWP, and forget all about the problems caused by the mechanical pump.

I did manage to strip the pump today, I used a rickety press attached to a workmate type bench a 8mm 1/2 " socket and light taps with a club hammer. The Electric pump does look good but would more than double the value of the whole car. Thank you all for your help and advice.
