A couple of problems,

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

A couple of problems,

Postby toneinblack » 01 Aug 2014 13:58

After working out the upping and lowering the roof, Ive now started to look into the oil drip that has appeared on the floor of the garage under my tr7 (dhc) It looks like its either from the sump or the crankshaft cover ( a friend said that who works a bit on cars, ) we both thought the sump sounded the easier option but looking at it , it looks just as hard to replace the sump gasket,
any traditional tr7 oil leaks in this area? also whilst the car was on the axle stands and jack , we noticed the rubber boots in the front suspension were chewed up and have ordered some more from rimmer bros, and finally ( for now ) whilst the car was up in the air we spotted 2 wires ( both blue) on both sides that were hanging loose from the cruise(?) lights, took the side covers off and no bulb holders inside and with rimmers out of stock , and also noticed rust on inside at top of front wings, looks like ive some work to do .[:0]

One standard area for oil leaks is around the oil pump and transfer housing. The O-rings get hard after 30 years and will leak. With oil being blown around by air movement its very hard to identify the source.
Robsport sell an Oil Leak Kit for about £5 which will fix that and its a dead easy job.

I would suggest its worth doing that first then see if the leak is still going.

They are on the lower right rear corner/side of the engine. I replaced these O rings when I first bought my car and it cured 90% of my oil leaks.

Clean out the gearbox subframe before you start trying to stop a few drips of oil on your floor.

I changed the gearbox oil to Penrite manual transmission oil from auto transmission fluid, about 6 months & a few thousand kilometers or more ago. I did not wash out the subframe.

At the same time I washed the drip trays from under the car. I am still getting a few drips of ATF in the gearbox drip tray, & as yet no Penrite oil.

When I noticed this I decided to let it go, to see how long it took to stop.

I do worry occasionally about the engine. There has not been a single drip of oil from it since it was rebuilt. Now we all know that is just not right for a Triumph.
