ignition key won't turn

Postby Sautie » 27 Jul 2014 06:58

My daughters' 7 has just experienced a problem. The ignition key goes all the way into the ignition and will only turn so far until it stops, roughly half through its turn. Result no electrical contact and thus unable to star the car.[:(]

Try some silicone spray (not graphite spray) and see if it's a lube issue. I believe they are made out of pot metal so can break. I had my glove box lock break so couldn't unlock the glove box.

Try rotating the steering wheel a small amount, if the lock bar in the steering lock is loaded with torque from the steering shaft it can be very difficult/impossible to rotate the key in the ignition lock - forcing the key may break either the key off in the lock or crack the lock housing. Agree with this, try "jiggling" the steering wheel back and forward gently as you turn the key. If that steering lock has engaged it can be quite difficult to free sometimes.
