TR7 1980 FI

Postby lucr1967 » 17 Jul 2014 10:30

Hi fellow TR owners..

per my previous most .. i'm still fighting the engine start..

i decided to put it in the hands of a specialist as it is really puzzling me ..long story short.. there is fuel , there is ignition , timing is right .. so far i did everything right ..according to the specialist now the car is willing to start but the sparks turn black , meaning to much air .. he believes the injectors are not openeningor not opening enough ?

..altough i tested all parts on the bench.. all seems to work fine now.. but not starting .. injectors?

anyhting that you guys can think of that is in play here?

i hope the ECU is not playing tricks here :(

best regards,
Luc

Luc, does it try to start but not run, or is it just turning over without firing at all?

Is the separate cold start injector working?

Hi Tony,

it seems it is willnig to start, going around nicely, just won't run , we have spark ,when turning the distributor forward it gets clunky , heavy back and exhaust firing due to wrong ignition point.. so my guess is that all is there.. we have fuel on the common rail under pressure..
when we remove the inlet tube and play with the flow valve you can hear the fuel pump working , disconnnecting the common rail it gives a decent flow of fuel (into a bottle :) )

the 5th valve does work , unmounted it , cleaned and tested it (wired up on the motor but not mount under the plenum chamber it gives nice spray)

in very rare occasions it runs for a very short time , going up to 2000rpm and then stops again.

best regards,
Luc

I had a simlar problem with a FI TR7. The problem was that the one of the power wires for the ECU was partially pulled out of the plug at the combination relay.

It would start and run for 5 seconds on the Cold Start (5th injector) but the main injectors were not operating.

It will not start if there is a lean condition. The cold start injector seems to be covered (working). Is the Aux air hose hooked up. When fiddling around with mine I had left off the hose going to aux air valve and it wouldn't start. After a quick look I saw the hose lying there. Hooked it up to aux air valve and it started right away. The aux air valve is slightly tapered so I made some marks on it so the hose would get a good hold on it. The aux air valve is located under the air plenum and a little hard to see. Any air getting into the plenum after the air mass module can prevent starting or bad idle so hoses including air inlet hose must be connected and not leak.

I checked the cobination relay, even tried with a spare, connectors seem OK.
As for the aux.air valve, I unmounted that one (lot of work indeed as it sits under the plenum chamber) , re-mounted, hooked up tubes and wires, triple checked everything ...can't put my finger on a faulty component, tube or wire...

I understand it is hard to analyze from a distance without seeing the car or hearing it rumble around.. so I really appreciated all comments,I could go and search for anhter ECU but my intution tell's me it is 'something' else..

best regards,
Luc

Pull the 4 injectors and have them serviced - it's cheap and most likely needed.
