I have a rubber gear lever gaitor (5 speed box) which looks just like a flatish piece of rubber mat with a hole in the middle. I'm assuming everyones will be the same, but to me this doesn't seem good enough, a lot of road/engine noise will come through plus any fumes etc.

Has anyone else looked at this and improved on it?

Yes, the PROPER rubber shift boot gaiter is Part # YKC4030 for the TR7. For the TR8 the #'s are YKC1895 up to VIN 201504 and YKC4029 for VIN beyond 201504.

You are correct, that flat mat is pretty much thin gruel.

With engine noise coming out the louvres and any "fumes" being dissipated by the fresh air flowing over and around the wind shield the .005% of these coming through the rubber gaiter shield isn't an issue.

Mildred, the gaiter I have IS part number YKC4030, the others don't seem available, but yes it is thin gruel, that sums it up quite well.

Fi Spyder, I know what your saying but I'm thinking while stationary, I'd rather have something that fits snuggly and seperates the cabin from the outside.

I have both kinds of gaiters in my parts inventory. The one pictured in the Rimmer's catalog is the preferred one as it has a 'bell' shape enclosing the shifter. The other one lacks the 'bell' shape allowing air, water, and other assorted foulness to be blocked by the psuedo fabric of the interior vinyl shifter gaiter.

I recently pulled one of the taller style from a scrap yard car and installed it to replace the flat one. I can report no change in the noise level or feel during shifting, but I think it is a much better design.
