Axle oil

Postby bmcecosse » 12 Jun 2014 21:44

My useless 'restoration' book doesn't show me where the axle filler is - nor does it tell me what oil should be inside.... Safe to assume EP 90 is ok?

Yes, the axle filler is right next to the kumquat fitting and it does call for EP90.

What's that you say, you've never adjusted the kumquat fitting? The next thing you'll be complaining about is your complete lack of knowledge about the Simonize vent hose. For Gawd's sake, they're all right there together!

On the 1976 TR7, the filler plug is on the front of the pumpkin encased in nasty, grungy, oil packed dirt.

When I had my axle out to take the gas tank out, I turned it up side down for a few days so the maximum would drain out. I added a little STP about third to half a bottle then filled with gear oil to make it a little quieter.

Hi,

Just be careful with what spec EP90 you use there is GL4 and GL5, the GL5 spec is said to attack ' yellow metal ' ( phosphor bronze etc. ) bushes and thrust washers. I also added some Molyslip when I last changed mine.

Cheers John
