After much tinkering (which I actually enjoyed) and draining of the fuel tank (which wasn't too bad a job), I added 10 litres of the expensive stuff and...

It's alive!!!!!!!
Apologies for the wonky video, and many, many, many thanks to those who offered help. This is a fantastic forum.
I just need to work out why the windscreen wipers aren't working and it will be roadworthy after a break check.

On normal people's cars with the steering wheel on the left side of the car, next to the battery is a central ground. This is often corroded and truly nasty in appearance. Remove this bolt and clean the bejeebers out of it and the various ground wires. The windshield wiper motor is also grounded here. This may solve the wipers and other problems in one fell swoop.

Feel quite happy with myself
Thanks Mildred, I'll look for that ground. If that doesn't work I'll have the steering column switches off to test them.
Cheers

Chris,
you seem quite normal to me so please don't be shocked to find your steering column on the right hand side of the csr, this is also quite normal.[:D]

Thanks Claypole.
I'm at work at the moment and trying to picture the inside of the car. I was getting a bit worried as all I could picture on the left side was some sort of lockable box. Was starting to think I didn't fall into the 'normal' category [:)]

1/3 of the cars in the world have the steering on the RH side. 2/3 of the cars in the world have the steering on the LH side. You can draw your own conclusions as to what is normal and what is not.[:p]

Yes, and that would be perfectly normal, in their minds.
Did you know tomorrows project in the machine shed will be to clean that grounding bolt next to the battery and windshield wiper motor? Looking at it this afternoon, Whoa!, what a little mess.
